Is the ABC & Mardi Himal Trek Very Hard?

While not requiring technical climbing skills, the ABC & Mardi Himal Trek is a sustained, moderately challenging journey that should not be underestimated. With proper preparation and pacing, it's achievable for most healthy trekkers.

    Key challenges you'll face include:

    Altitude

The route reaches 4,130m at Annapurna Base Camp and up to 4,500m at Mardi Himal Base Camp. Reduced oxygen makes sustained effort more demanding, especially above 3,000m. Hydration, steady pacing, and acclimatization are essential.

    Duration and Distance

Across 13 days, expect 4–8 hours of trekking most days (longer on base camp days). Distances vary with terrain, altitude, and transitions between the ABC Sanctuary and the Mardi ridge.

    Terrain

Expect uneven, rocky trails, long stair sections (e.g., Chhomrong steps), forested paths, and exposed ridgelines near Mardi. Daily elevation gains can be significant but are manageable with steady pacing.

    Mental Fortitude

Back-to-back trekking days, basic teahouse comforts, changing weather, and high-altitude exertion can be mentally taxing. A positive, flexible mindset is crucial.

    Who Can Do It?

With the right approach, this trek is accessible to a wide range of people, from seasoned hikers to determined beginners. Successful trekkers have ranged from teenagers to individuals in their 70s. The key is a willingness to challenge yourself and adequate preparation.

Why Choose a 13-Day ABC & Mardi Himal Trek?

While shorter and longer options exist, a 13-day itinerary is ideal for experiencing both Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal Base Camp in a single, well-paced journey. Here's why:

    1

    Proper Acclimatization

The plan builds altitude gradually through the ABC Sanctuary before tackling the higher Mardi ridge, reducing AMS risk and keeping days sustainable.

    2

A More Intimate and Comprehensive Experience

You'll traverse both the lush ABC valley and the quieter Mardi Himal ridge, capturing forests, terraced fields, glacial basins, and airy viewpoints with time to actually enjoy them.

    3

    Deeper Cultural Immersion

Overnight stops in Gurung villages (e.g., Chhomrong, Landruk) allow for meaningful interactions and insight into local culture, food, and daily life.

    4

A Perfect Blend of Challenge and Enjoyment

ABC's amphitheater sunrise and Mardi's airy ridgeline viewpoints provide big-moment payoffs, while daily stages remain balanced for recovery and enjoyment.

    5

    Accessibility for Many

With 4–8 hour days and a steady altitude progression, fit first-timers and seasoned trekkers alike can complete the route safely with preparation.

    6

    Preparation for Future Adventures

Completing two base camps in one itinerary builds confidence for higher-altitude climbs (e.g., Island Peak, Mera Peak) and longer Himalayan traverses.

A Typical Day on the Trek

Your days on the ABC & Mardi Himal trek follow a steady rhythm that connects you with the landscape, culture, and daily life in the Himalaya.

    Mornings

Wake early to the teahouse coming to life. After a hearty breakfast, pack your daypack and set out on the trail—most days involve 4–8 hours of walking depending on terrain and altitude.

    The Trail

The scenery evolves from terraced fields and rhododendron forests in the ABC valley to airy ridgelines on the Mardi route. Expect stone stairways (e.g., around Chhomrong), forest paths, and rocky sections above the treeline with big mountain views.

    Lunch and Breaks

Midday, stop for a hot lunch at a teahouse (about an hour). Take shorter breaks to hydrate, snack, photograph, and enjoy viewpoints.

    Evenings

Arrive by late afternoon. Evenings are for resting, enjoying a warm dinner at the teahouse, trip debriefs with your guide, and—when skies are clear—stargazing above the ridges.

    Food and Accommodation

    In Kathmandu

You can expect to stay in a comfortable three-star hotel with double occupancy rooms. Breakfast will be provided.

    On the Trek

You'll stay in mountain lodges, commonly known as teahouses. The rooms are basic, typically with two beds, but the hospitality is warm and welcoming.

    Meals

During the trek, your package will generally include breakfast, lunch, and dinner, which you'll have at the teahouses. The menu offers a variety of options, from traditional Nepali dishes like dal bhat (rice and lentils) to pasta, pizza, and Tibetan bread. The food choices become simpler the higher you go.

    Showers

Hot showers may not always be available, especially at higher altitudes, and there is usually an extra charge for them. However, boiled drinking water will be accessible.

    Staying Connected and Charged

    Internet/WiFi

Many teahouses offer paid Wi‑Fi along the ABC & Mardi routes in villages such as Chhomrong, Bamboo, Himalaya, Deurali, and the Mardi ridge (Low/High Camp, Badal Danda). Mobile data (Ncell/NTC) works better in lower valleys and near towns like Pokhara, with weaker or no coverage at higher camps.

    Charging

Electricity is available in most villages (often solar at higher stops). Expect a small fee to charge devices—usually increasing with altitude. Bring a high‑capacity power bank and a multi‑port charger.

    Transportation

Your tour package for ABC & Mardi Himal typically includes the following transportation per the itinerary:

    • Private airport transfers on arrival and final departure in Kathmandu.
    • One‑way domestic flight: Kathmandu → Pokhara (approx. 25–30 minutes).
    • Private road transfers: Pokhara → Jhinu Danda trailhead (start), and Siding → Pokhara (end of trek).
    • Tourist bus: Pokhara → Kathmandu on Day 12 (optional upgrade to flight available at extra cost).

    Altitude Sickness and Acclimatization

As you'll be trekking to elevations above 5,000 meters, it's crucial to be aware of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

    Symptoms

The primary symptoms of AMS include headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, fatigue, and difficulty sleeping. These symptoms usually subside within 12 to 24 hours.

If they persist, the only cure is to descend to a lower altitude.

    Prevention

While AMS cannot be 100% prevented, the risk can be significantly reduced by:

    • Slow and Steady Ascent: A gradual climb with acclimatization days
    • Hydration: Drink plenty of water, at least 4 liters per day
    • Diamox: Consider talking to your doctor about using Diamox

    Getting Ready and Staying Safe

Proper preparation is key to a successful and enjoyable ABC & Mardi Himal trek.

    Physical Fitness

Since this is a moderately challenging, high-altitude trek, you need to be physically fit. If you lead a sedentary lifestyle, it's recommended to start training at least 3 to 6 months before your trip.

    Recommended Training:
Cardiovascular exercise: Engage in activities like running, jogging, swimming, or cycling to build your endurance.
Strength training: Focus on leg and core exercises like squats, lunges, and push-ups.
Hiking practice: Go on long day hikes, preferably on hilly terrain, to get your body used to walking for several hours.
    First Aid Knowledge

It's beneficial to have a basic understanding of first aid for minor injuries.

    Mental Preparation

Research the weather, terrain, and landscape of the Annapurna region to mentally prepare for the journey ahead.

    Consult Your Doctor

If you have any pre-existing health conditions, consult your doctor before booking the trek.

    Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for the ABC & Mardi Himal Trek. Your insurance policy must cover:

    • Medical expenses and emergency evacuation up to an altitude of at least 6,000 meters.
    • Trip cancellation and interruption.
    • Loss or theft of baggage and equipment.

Your trekking agency will obtain the necessary permits on your behalf. These include:

    • • Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP)
    • • Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS)

    Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Adding extra days enhances acclimatization and gives you more time on key sections. We can customize additional nights at various points on the ABC & Mardi route.

    Popular options include:

    • Acclimatization and Exploration: Add a rest day in Chhomrong (ABC side) or High Camp/Badal Danda (Mardi ridge) to enjoy short hikes and viewpoints.
    • Side Treks: Extra time at Jhinu Danda (hot springs) or Landruk for cultural immersion; additional viewpoints along the Mardi ridge.
    • Rest and Recovery: Insert a buffer day in Pokhara at the end; consider a lighter day before ABC or before the MHBC sunrise hike.
    • Kathmandu Exploration: Add a cultural day for UNESCO heritage sites, or a short day hike around the valley.

Transportation options to Pokhara, the gateway to the Annapurna region, are available by both road and air. The scenic drive takes 7–8 hours along the Prithvi Highway, while multiple daily flights (approx. 25–30 minutes) are operated by local airlines such as Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines, and Nepal Airlines.

    Key points regarding transportation:

    • Schedule: Tourist buses typically depart early morning from Kathmandu and take 7–8 hours to reach Pokhara. Flights operate throughout the day, with a flight time of ~25–30 minutes from Kathmandu to Pokhara.
    • Scenic Route: The drive to Pokhara follows the Prithvi Highway along the Trishuli River, offering beautiful views of the Manaslu and Annapurna ranges. You'll pass through historic towns like Bandipur and see the sacred Manakamana Temple along the way.
    • Reliability: Road transportation is generally reliable, though delays can occur due to traffic or road conditions. Flights are more weather-dependent but offer a much faster journey to Pokhara.

Yes, it is possible for children to participate in the ABC & Mardi Himal 13‑day trek with thoughtful planning. We customize pace, daily walking hours, and rest days to prioritize safety, acclimatization, and enjoyment for younger trekkers.

    Consider the following:

    • Experience and Stamina: The child should enjoy hiking and be capable of 4–6 hours of walking per day on steps and mixed terrain. Prior hiking experience helps.
    • Acclimatization: We can shorten days or add buffer nights (e.g., Chhomrong or Badal Danda/High Camp area) to ensure gradual ascent and reduce AMS risk.
    • Monitoring for AMS: Children may not clearly express symptoms. Parents and guides should watch for headaches, nausea, unusual fatigue, disturbed sleep, or loss of appetite and descend if needed.

The ideal time for the combined ABC & Mardi Himal 13‑day trek depends on your preference for weather, crowds, and flowers/snow. Two prime seasons stand out:

    • Post‑Monsoon (Oct–Nov): Crystal‑clear skies, stable weather, and the most reliable mountain views across the Annapurna amphitheater and Mardi ridge. It's also the busiest.
    • Pre‑Monsoon (Mar–May): Warmer temps and spectacular rhododendron blooms in lower elevations. Views are great in the mornings, with occasional afternoon haze.

For many first‑time trekkers, the combined ABC & Mardi Himal itinerary is a gentler introduction than Everest Base Camp, with lower maximum altitude, varied scenery, and flexible pacing. The choice still depends on your fitness and goals.

    Here's a comparison:

    • Altitude and Difficulty: ABC (4,130 m) and Mardi viewpoints (~4,200–4,500 m) are significantly lower than EBC (5,364 m) and Kala Patthar (5,545 m), reducing AMS risk and overall strain.
    • Scenery and Terrain: ABC & Mardi combine terraced fields, rhododendron forests, Gurung villages, the dramatic Annapurna Sanctuary, and airy ridge walks on the Mardi side. EBC is higher, drier, and glacial with big‑mountain drama.
    • Accessibility: ABC & Mardi start via Pokhara (road/flight) and offer many itinerary variants and exit points. EBC typically involves a flight to Lukla and fewer low‑altitude exit routes.

Prior high‑altitude trekking experience is not mandatory, but good fitness is essential. Expect 5–6 hours of walking most days (occasionally longer), with stairs, mixed terrain, and some steep sections—especially on the Mardi ridge and the final climb into the Annapurna Sanctuary.

We recommend a training regimen that includes:

    • Cardiovascular Exercise: 3–4 times a week (hiking, running, cycling, or swimming) to build endurance.
    • Strength Training: Emphasize legs and core to handle long ascents/descents and stair sections.
    • Practice Hikes: Do several long day hikes in your actual boots and with a loaded pack.

A comprehensive packing list will be provided upon confirmation of your trip. However, essential items include layered clothing, a high-quality down jacket, a warm sleeping bag, and well-worn-in hiking boots.

Kathmandu's Thamel district is a one-stop shop for trekking gear. You can easily rent or purchase any equipment you need at reasonable prices.

    • Renting: Items like down jackets, sleeping bags, and trekking poles are commonly rented. This is a cost-effective option, but be sure to inspect the quality and condition of the gear carefully.
    • Buying: It is highly recommended to purchase personal items like hiking boots and base layers yourself to ensure a proper fit and hygiene. Breaking in your boots well before the trek is crucial to prevent blisters.

It is not safe to drink tap or stream water directly. We strongly advise against buying single-use plastic water bottles, as they are expensive and create a significant environmental problem in the fragile mountain ecosystem.

The best practices for staying hydrated are:

    • Water Purification: Bring a reliable water purification method. Options include purification tablets or drops, a UV sterilizer like a SteriPen, or a water bottle with a built-in filter.
    • Boiled Water: You can ask the teahouse and lodge owners to refill your bottle with boiled water, which is the safest option. They typically charge a small fee for this service, and the cost increases with altitude. Please note that the cost of drinking water is not included in the package.

Toilet facilities along the ABC & Mardi trails are basic but functional. In the lower elevations and larger settlements like Ghandruk, Chhomrong, or Siding, you may find Western-style flush toilets in your teahouse.

As you ascend, the facilities become more rustic. You can expect to encounter:

    • Squat Toilets: These are common in the higher-altitude teahouses.
    • Shared Facilities: Private, attached bathrooms are less common at higher elevations; toilets are typically shared and may be located in a separate outhouse.
    • Bring Your Own Supplies: You should always carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as these are generally not provided.

Yes, showing respect for local Gurung and Magar communities is an important part of the ABC & Mardi experience. Here are some key guidelines:

    • Modest Dress: Wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees, especially when walking through villages and visiting monasteries.
    • Respectful Photography: Always ask for permission before taking photos of local people. Photography may be prohibited inside monasteries and religious sites.
    • Trail Etiquette: When encountering pack animals like yaks or dzopkyos, always stand on the uphill side of the trail to avoid being knocked off.
    • Religious Customs: Always pass mani (prayer) walls, stupas, and chortens on your left, walking in a clockwise direction. Use your right hand or both hands to give or receive items.
    • Greetings: A friendly "Namaste" (I salute the divine in you) with hands pressed together is the traditional and respectful greeting.
