Today, we will travel to Pokhara aboard a comfortable tourist bus. Buckle up for an exciting 7 to 8-hour journey along the expansive Prithvi Highway, which follows the Trishuli River—a hotspot for thrill-seeking rafters. As we progress, the majestic peaks of Manaslu, Fishtail, and the Annapurna range will gradually come into view. We will pass the historic Newari town of Bandipur and see the sacred Manakamana Temple perched high above us. Finally, we arrive in Pokhara, the enchanting city of lakes, nestled on the shores of Phewa Lake.
From Tadapani, our journey continues with a steep and dramatic descent through a dense forest of rhododendrons and oak. The trail plunges down to the valley floor, leading us to a suspension bridge that crosses the Kimrong Khola. On the other side of the river, the real challenge of the day begins with a significant and steep uphill climb. This strenuous ascent eventually eases as the trail brings us up to the ridge, where a final, more gradual walk along stone steps leads us into the large and beautiful Gurung village of Chhomrong, the gateway to the Annapurna Sanctuary.
The pathway from Chhomrong begins with a steep descent down famous natural stone steps to a suspension bridge over the Chhomrong Khola. Once across, the trail ascends sharply towards the village of Sinuwa. From here, the path eases as we continue towards Khuldighar through a rich forest of bamboo and fir. After passing Bamboo village, a challenging vertical ascent begins, taking us to Dobhan. From here, a final short stretch brings us to a cozy bundle of small lodges known as Himalaya.
Today is one of the most impressive days of the trek. We are approaching the Annapurna Base Camp—a natural sanctuary surrounded by gigantic peaks. We will journey upward through a shadowy forest towards Hinku Cave and then to Deurali, where the landscape becomes wild and untamed. The path constantly rises, and after passing Bagar village, we will ascend a stone staircase towards the 3,700m Machhapuchhare Base Camp (MBC). After admiring the two-tailed summit, we will make the final 3-hour push across a thin grassland to reach our goal: ABC, where we will spend a starry night surrounded by a cathedral of snowy ridges.
Experience a sunrise that will change your perception forever. From ABC, witness the sun blanketing the snow-topped peaks, creating a unique and unforgettable display of light and color. After breakfast, we will begin our long descent, walking back through the familiar lands of MBC, Deurali, and Dobhan. The sun will reveal details of the terrain that may have gone unnoticed on our initial journey. Absorbing the serene energy of the Himalayas, we will reach the village of Bamboo, where we will conclude our day's journey.
The long trekking days are about to end, but first, we will set our sights on a much-needed relaxation at the hot springs of Jhinu Danda, known for their therapeutic benefits. This is a perfect finale to our exceptional Annapurna adventure! The picturesque landscapes of Sinuwa and Chhomrong will pave our way back towards this magical hot spring of nature, which we will reach in approximately 5 to 6 hours of walking, ready to soothe our tired muscles.
From Jhinu Danda, for one last time, we will walk across a swaying suspension bridge over the Modi Khola and head towards Kyumi Village. A final downhill path will advance us to Birethanti, from where we will walk for about an hour to reach Nayapul. Our private vehicle will be ready to transport us back to the comforts of Pokhara. Looking back, we will remember the times we spent together, sharing laughter and creating lasting memories.
We are returning to Kathmandu today, taking a long but scenic bus ride along the vast highways of Nepal. While not requiring technical climbing skills, the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek is a strenuous and challenging journey that should not be underestimated. It's categorized as a moderate to challenging trek, achievable for most people with a good level of fitness and proper preparation.
This is the most significant challenge. The trek starts at Matque and ascends to 4,130m at Annapurna Base Camp. At these elevations, the oxygen level is reduced, making every physical effort more demanding.
The round trip covers approximately 115 km (about 71 miles) over 13 days. This means you'll be walking for 4 to 7 hours on most days.
The trail is often uneven, rocky, and involves steep ascents and descents. You can expect daily elevation gains of less than 1000m.
The combination of physical exertion, basic living conditions, and being away from home can be mentally taxing. A positive and resilient mindset is crucial.
With the right approach, this trek is accessible to a wide range of people, from seasoned hikers to determined beginners. Successful trekkers have ranged from teenagers to individuals in their 70s. The key is a willingness to challenge yourself and adequate preparation.
While shorter and longer options exist, a 10-day itinerary is often recommended for a balanced and successful ABC experience. Here's why:
A 10-day trek allows for a gradual ascent with proper acclimatization built into the itinerary. The moderate altitude gain and well-paced schedule significantly reduce the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and ensure a comfortable journey to ABC.
A 10-day itinerary allows you to explore the diverse landscapes of the Annapurna region thoroughly. You'll experience everything from lush rhododendron forests to high alpine terrain, with time to soak in the beauty of each location.
You'll have time to spend in the unique Gurung villages, interact with the local community, and learn about their ancient culture and traditions. The hospitality of the Gurung people and their rich history is a highlight of the journey.
This timeframe allows for a challenging yet enjoyable pace. You'll have time to explore the vibrant villages, and you can take on highlights like the pre-dawn view in Annapurna Base Camp for spectacular sunrise views of the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre ranges.
The reasonable daily walking duration of 4 to 6 hours and the moderate difficulty level make a 10-day ABC trek accessible to hikers of varying experience and fitness levels, including families and older adults.
Successfully completing the ABC trek will build your confidence and prepare you for more demanding high-altitude adventures in Nepal, such as climbing peaks like Island Peak, Mera Peak, or other challenging treks.
Your days on the ABC trek will follow a rhythm that connects you with the natural landscape and the local culture.
You'll wake up early to the sounds of the teahouse coming to life. After a hearty breakfast, you'll pack your daypack and set out on the trail, typically walking for 4 to 6 hours each day.
The scenery changes dramatically as you ascend. In the lower regions, you'll be accompanied by the Dudh Koshi River and walk through lush rhododendron and coniferous forests. As you climb higher, the landscape transforms into a dramatic realm of rock and ice, with sparse tundra vegetation.
Your trek will be punctuated by a lunch break of about an hour and shorter stops to rest, take photos, and soak in the incredible views.
You'll arrive at your destination for the day in the late afternoon. The evenings are for relaxing, enjoying a delicious dinner at a Sherpa-run teahouse, and stargazing in the clear mountain sky.
You can expect to stay in a comfortable three-star hotel with double occupancy rooms. Breakfast will be provided.
You'll stay in mountain lodges, commonly known as teahouses. The rooms are basic, typically with two beds, but the hospitality is warm and welcoming.
During the trek, your package will generally include breakfast, lunch, and dinner, which you'll have at the teahouses. The menu offers a variety of options, from traditional Nepali dishes like dal bhat (rice and lentils) to pasta, pizza, and Tibetan bread. The food choices become simpler the higher you go.
Hot showers may not always be available, especially at higher altitudes, and there is usually an extra charge for them. However, boiled drinking water will be accessible.
You can stay connected during your trek. In larger villages like Lukla, Phakding, and Namche Bazaar, you can purchase unlimited WiFi access for a fee. Everest Link WiFi cards with data packages are also available for purchase in Namche. You can also use 4G data packages from Ncell or NTC by getting a local SIM card.
Electricity is available in the villages, often supplemented by solar power. You can charge your electronic devices, though there is usually a small fee for this service.
Your tour package will typically include all necessary transportation:
As you'll be trekking to elevations above 5,000 meters, it's crucial to be aware of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
The primary symptoms of AMS include headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, fatigue, and difficulty sleeping. These symptoms usually subside within 12 to 24 hours.
If they persist, the only cure is to descend to a lower altitude.
While AMS cannot be 100% prevented, the risk can be significantly reduced by:
