Are you craving a journey that transcends mere geography and allows you to dive into the heights of spirituality and the rich culture of Nepal? The Gosainkunda Lake Trek is an incredible experience that takes you along one of the most splendid and sacred trails on the planet. This trek is more than just a walk in the mountains; it's an opportunity to contemplate, reflect, and celebrate the simple, profound beauty of life, all within the stunningly attractive territory of the Langtang National Park.
This 8-day trekking adventure begins with a stimulating and scenic drive from Kathmandu along the Pasang Lhamu Highway to the town of Dhunche Bazaar. This area is nestled within the Langtang Valley, one of Nepal's most beloved and wildest national parks, yet it remains readily accessible for trekking. The region is home to the amazing Tamang Buddhist people, who live in harmony with the extraordinary wildlife of the park, all in the lap of towering peaks like Langtang Lirung (7,234m) and Gangchenpo (6,387m).
Your trek on foot will lead you up through enchanting forests of spectacular pines to the spiritual pearl of Shin Gumba, also known as Chandanbari. From there, the trail continues to ascend to the incredible viewpoint of Laurebinayak (3,930m). This cute little spot will reawaken all your senses with a stunningly dazzling panorama that includes the Annapurna, Manaslu, and Ganesh Himal ranges.
The journey then takes you steeply upward, and after crossing the Gosainkunda Pass, you will encounter a series of consecrated, high-altitude lakes. First, the peaceful Saraswati Kunda, then the Bhairav Kunda, and finally, the hallowed Gosainkunda Lake itself, perched at a breathtaking 4,380 meters above sea level. Reaching the shores of this holy lake is the main goal of your trek. This is not just a body of water; it is a spiritually significant site that draws thousands of Hindu pilgrims every year during the auspicious festival of Janai Purnima. According to legend, the lake was created by the Hindu deity Lord Shiva himself, who thrust his trident into the glacier to quench his thirst after consuming a deadly poison.
After soaking in the profound atmosphere of the sacred lakes, you will trace your steps back down, revisiting the enchanting villages before heading back to Kathmandu. This not-so-intense trip is a perfect short adventure that allows you to see the beautiful and contrasting landscapes of the Langtang region while learning the rich history and culture of its legendary locations.
Here is a user-friendly and highly detailed day-by-day itinerary for your incredible 8-day Gosainkunda Lake Trek, formatted to be informative, engaging, and easy to follow.
We will meet you at the TIA arrival gate and transfer you to your centrally located, comfortable accommodation in Kathmandu. Until all the guests for the trek have arrived, you can enjoy your free time roaming around and getting to know the delightful, chaotic atmosphere of Nepal’s capital. Once everyone has gathered, your guide will hold a short explanatory meeting to provide information about the travel program for your 8-day Gosainkunda Lake trekking journey. In the evening, you can treat yourself to flavorful Nepali dishes.
After breakfast at daybreak, we will get ready for a scenic drive to Dhunche Bazaar, located inside the territorial boundary of Langtang National Park. Traveling out of the Kathmandu traffic, we will make our way along the Trishuli Highway. Soon, we will stop at the busy market of Trishuli. From here, the long, turning road of the Pasang Lhamu Highway will direct us toward the old town of Nuwakot. This small mountain village is the center for the administration of the Rasuwa district and has a small army checkpoint. After settling into our lodge, the glowing peaks of Ganesh Himal and Langtang Lirung will be truly enchanting to watch.
The walking phase of our trek commences today. After enjoying breakfast with the gorgeous mountains of Dhunche, we will set off on foot towards Shin Gumba, also known as Chandanbari. Be prepared for an almost 1,300-meter elevation gain today, which involves a lot of tiring uphill climbing. From Dhunche, we will walk for about half an hour to reach a captivating suspension bridge at Ghatte Khola, where a mesmerizing waterfall awaits. After crossing this bridge, we will climb along the path towards Deurali. After some rest and lunch, our journey continues steeply upward for another hour to finally arrive at the spiritual settlement of Shin Gumba.
From Shin Gumba, we will start hiking along a well-paved, flat path that runs through a magnificent forest of tall pines. After about an hour on a steep, well-kept path, we will gain almost 600 meters to reach the stunning highland pasture of Laurebinayak. This spot provides a splendidly gorgeous spectacle of the Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh, and Langtang ranges. We will keep going, ascending along the hairpin bends of the trail, finally reaching the Gosainkunda pass. From here, we will approach the first lake, Saraswati Kunda, then the second, Bhairav Kunda. Ultimately, we will soon be walking alongside the beautiful, serene shore of the main Gosainkunda Lake itself.
We will spend the entire morning absorbing and feeling the splendid scenery and atmosphere of Gosainkunda Lake. If you wish, you can take a hike further towards the other pious lakes in the area, such as Dudh Kunda (Milk Lake) and Chandra Kunda (Moon Lake). After this peaceful experience, we will now get set to make our return journey. We will first trek back to Laurebinayak, and from there, we will enjoy a scenic downhill hike through Cholangpati and back to the peaceful monastery village of Chandanbari (Shin Gumba), where we will conclude our day of trekking.
Today is the final day of our fun and adventurous trekking journey. We will be revisiting our route as we leave behind Chandanbari and walk down through the picturesque villages of Dhimsa, Deurali, and Khendi, until we reach the long suspension bridge at Ghatte Khola. The same beautiful waterfall will welcome us as we cross the bridge, and in no time, we will be back at our shelter in the Dhunche Market, where we can celebrate the successful completion of our trek.
From Dhunche, our bus will take us back to Kathmandu at daybreak after we finish our breakfast. After we exit the Rasuwa district, we will traverse the same stunning landscapes, passing through Rani Pauwa and Trishuli on our way. In the evening, a celebratory farewell dinner will once more bring us all together, where we can relive the wonderful memories of our journey to the sacred lakes of Gosainkunda.
Enjoy your breakfast in the midst of the Himalayan air for one more time. Then, one of our employees will accompany you to Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), where you will check in for your international journey back home. This marks the end of your incredible Gosainkunda Lake adventure with us. We wish you a safe journey and hope to see you again in Nepal.
