Are you ready to watch the magic of the Himalayas unfold on the ultimate trekking adventure? Be forewarned: our 43-day Kanchenjunga & Makalu Base Camp Trek is a serious expedition, an epic journey designed exclusively for hardcore trekkers who possess superior physical strength, endurance, and a true spirit for adventure. This is not just a trek; it is a grand traverse along a significant and challenging section of the Great Himalayan Trail (GHT), connecting the remote and pristine base camps of the world's third and fifth-highest mountains.
The Great Himalayan Trail is more than just a line on a map; it is a way to experience the raw, untamed beauty of the Himalayas while connecting with the resilient people who call these high valleys home. For the majority of this trek, we will be journeying across this legendary route, following it from the base of the mighty Kanchenjunga (8,586m) all the way to the foot of the magnificent Makalu (8,481m). You will pass adjacent to the Tibetan border, getting a rare and fascinating glimpse into the cultural and geographical landscapes that flow between these two Himalayan nations. By the end of this journey, you will have stood in the shadow of two of the most formidable peaks on Earth and will be one of a very small handful of trekkers who have ever conquered this remote and challenging section of the GHT.
Your journey begins in the far-eastern corner of Nepal, in the pristine Kanchenjunga region. Here, you will be privy to a panoramic view of numerous incredible summits, including Tent Peak and Nepal Peak, before reaching the main event: the majestic, close-up view of Mount Kanchenjunga itself from its northern base camp, Pangpema. From this high point, your traverse begins. You will cross the challenging Nango La pass and descend into the remote Yangma Valley, visiting the incredible, isolated village of Olangchunngola, known for its yak farming and deep cultural roots.
The adventure continues as you push further west, crossing another high pass, the Lumba Sumba La (5,160m), to reach the village of Chyantang. Here, you will have a unique opportunity to experience the culture of the Lhomi people, an indigenous group whose traditions are influenced by both Buddhist and ancient Shamanistic practices. From Chyantang, your journey continues towards your second major objective, Mount Makalu.
The second leg of this grand expedition culminates in reaching the spectacular Makalu Base Camp. After soaking in the incredible views of this iconic, pyramid-shaped peak, you will begin your descent through the beautiful and wild Barun Valley. A final pass crossing over the Shipton La brings you to the airstrip at Tumlingtar, where a scenic flight will take you back to Kathmandu, concluding your epic and unforgettable journey across the Great Himalayan Trail.
Your 43-day Kanchenjunga & Makalu Base Camp Trek connects the base camps of the world's third-highest (Kanchenjunga, 8,586m) and fifth-highest (Makalu, 8,481m) mountains. This epic trans-Himalayan expedition follows the Great Himalayan Trail through Nepal's remote far-eastern wilderness, crossing high passes including Nango La, Lumba Sumba La, and Shipton La, exploring the Barun Valley and Kanchenjunga region, and experiencing the unique cultures of Rai, Limbu, Sherpa, and Lhomi people.
Meet our airport representative from Himalayan Trekkers and get transferred to your accommodation once you arrive at the Tribhuwan International Airport. You are free on your own after checking in at the hotel. In the evening, you can stroll through the vibrant streets of Thamel.
After breakfast, we will have a trek briefing program. After the session, you will have a guided sightseeing tour of three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Patan Durbar Square, Boudhanath Stupa, and Pashupatinath Temple. The rest of the day is at your leisure for any last-minute preparations.
Today, we head out from Kathmandu and take the first flight to Bhadrapur. From there, our quickest way to reach the beautiful tea-growing town of Ilam is by private charter bus. We will spend the night at a hotel in Ilam, which makes for a comfortable first night's rest in the eastern hills.
With an early start, we will drive past aromatic plantations of tea and cardamom, with our first spectacular views of Kanchenjunga and Jannu in the far distance. At Taplejung, we will be introduced to our trekking crew. After lunch, we will begin our trek, following a downward trail to the Tamur River, which then leads us to Mitlung.
Since we will spend most of the next couple of days along the Tamur River, we can expect to be surrounded by lush greenery. A narrow, wooden bridge will aid us in crossing the Thiwa Khola, from where we will follow the undulating landscape to Chirwa. An enticing feature about Chirwa is its bustling bazaar and lively atmosphere.
Continuing along the river, we will arrive at the check post at Taplechok, where our permits will be validated. From here, we will continue towards the Great Himalaya Trail. After lunch at Phembu, we will ascend to Lelep, leaving behind the Tamur River. A final crossing over a suspension bridge gives us easy access to the Ghunsa Khola Valley and our campsite at Sekathum.
This can be considered our first foray into the adventurous, as we venture into narrow trails passing through the dense underbrush and foliage of the Himalayan forests. Our winding path takes us past Solima, where we will stop for lunch, and onward and upward to Amjilosa, a high point above the gorge that we will trek through the entire day.
From Amjilosa, we will set off through a lush bamboo forest, typical of this region, and climb up to a small ridge. After a short walk, we will come across Thyanyani, famous for its picturesque stone shelters. Following the undulating nature of the trail, we will overcome several crests and troughs before the final ascent to the Tibetan-influenced village of Gyabla.
Crossing the 3,000m mark, we will head towards Phole, spending most of the morning on a leisurely walk along the valley. Phole is well-known for its monastery and traditional carpet weaving industry. The highlight of the day is the quaint village of Ghunsa, most famously known for its cozy wooden houses, vibrant prayer flags, and status as the main hub of the region.
We will spend the day climbing up the nearby Lapsang La Pass in an attempt to acclimatize ourselves. Following the typical acclimatization ritual, we will climb to a steep elevation of about 4,000m at a quick pace and then descend back to Ghunsa for the night.
From Ghunsa, we will head further north, gradually climbing through pine forests. As we rise above, we will see a significant shift in the landscape as the north face of Jannu comes into view. Care is to be taken while crossing the landslide-prone regions. We will end the day in the high-altitude settlement of Khambachen after a winding descent.
This regularly spaced day for acclimatization comes at a great part of the GHT. Khambachen is an amazing village to take short walks and experience the small village atmosphere. A great way to spend the day is to hike up the Nupchu Khola for astounding, close-up sights of Mount Jannu.
We will head through Ramtang today as we march across a typical wonder of the region, a lateral moraine. Passing onto the rockier terrain, we will arrive at another moraine located northwest of the Kanchenjunga Glacier and overcome it to reach the high, remote pasture of Lhonak, with its unusual stone huts.
Another adventurous day awaits as we set out across one more moraine, this one derived from the Kanchenjunga glacier. We will climb steadily to reach Pangpema, the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp. Sitting in the shade of Kanchenjunga, we can fully appreciate its majestic nature. We will then return to Lhonak with a very restful walk down from Pangpema.
From Lhonak, we will retrace our steps all the way back down to the familiar village of Ghunsa in a relieving and much easier descent.
After two weeks of exhaustive hiking, you can take a day to relax and unwind in the village of Ghunsa. You are encouraged to repack your belongings and may also take the time to recharge any batteries at the lodge.
We will return to the main GHT trail from Ghunsa and head in the direction of Phole. Prior to reaching Phole, we will encounter a junction where we will turn off to reach another valley, setting up camp in a pasture, commonly known as a Kharka.
We will begin our day in the wee hours of the morning, spending half of our day hiking up to Nango La Pass, where we will halt briefly to take in the spectacular sight of Lopsang Peak and the south side of Kanchenjunga. During our descent, we will come across a stone shelter that serves as a landmark to continue north into the Yangma Khola Valley to our campsite.
Today is a day of river confluences as we trek along the Yangma Khola and then the Tamor Khola to arrive at Olangchung Gola, one of Nepal's more prosperous mountain villages that trades with Tibet. After a sumptuous lunch, we will continue along the Tamor Khola until it meets the Dingsamba Khola, where we will rest for the night.
In preparation to cross the Lumba Sumba pass, we will set out from River Camp and head upwards over a broad valley basin. The best part about this day is that you will get to see varying flora and hike across different terrains, including floodplains and black rock bands. We will make camp at the end of our trek when we enter the higher valley floor.
At sunrise, we will leave for the nearby rocky trail that rises in a steep ascent up to a plateau. The Lumba Sumba is a typical 1-2 pass with a lower and a higher pass. Both passes offer terrific views of Kanchenjunga and Jannu to the east, and Makalu to the west. From the pass, we will descend on the other side into the Lapsi Khola Valley and continue downwards to set up camp by the river.
The Lapsi Khola is a meandering valley formation that allows us glimpses of Makalu as we proceed. Continuing through the ever-present rhododendron bushes, we will head to the traditional Tibetan village of Thudam. After a short and relaxing day of trekking, we will put our feet up and rest near the village.
Since landslide areas are common in the region, we advise strict caution. Today we will head through one such area just past Thudam and through a dense forest. Keeping in step with the local guides, we will maneuver through narrow trails, past waterfalls, and across hastily strung log bridges. We will then cross a couple of lush pastures and halt for the night at the second Kharka.
Today, we will attempt to follow the GHT, even though the trail almost vanishes in some places. Following a primarily muddy descent to the Arun river, we will rest for lunch. Subsequently, we will cross a nearby bridge and emerge at Chyantang village for the night.
Hikers can choose to either rest on this day or save it for later. Having primarily descended from a great elevation, you may not feel the need to rest for an entire day, but it is a good opportunity to explore the unique culture of the Lhomi people in Chyantang.
We will begin climbing again towards a ridgeline and then to a minor pass. We will then climb a hill and reach a second ridge. This path then leads us to the Tojo Khola. We will traverse the east bank through a moss-covered rhododendron forest to reach our campsite, commonly known as Forest Camp.
We will ascend for another good 1,000m on this day as we scramble over a rocky trail out of the forest. The trail eventually plateaus and reveals several chortens. We will then continue towards the stunning Molun Pokhari Lake. The undisturbed lake serves as a fragile mirror that beautifully reflects its surroundings.
We will ascend steadily up a small trail that leads us to a ridge and then to a significant pass at 4,200m. From here, we will descend to a small lake followed by a walk down to a stream. We will cross the Dhunge Khola and proceed to a drier campsite where we can stop for the night.
Our next stop is Cave Camp, a campsite in the setting of a group of caves. We will continue along a narrow trail through a forest and along a river bank, a picturesque setting deserving of a few pictures. We will then cross another stream and proceed on to our unique campsite.
Another day of uphill climbing is in store as we rise above the campsite. After many uphill and downhill stretches, we will arrive at a shallow valley and climb out of it to cross another ridge and arrive at a black water lake, famously known as Kalo Pokhari.
We have a sequence of arduous climbs and steep descents ahead of us today. We will climb to the next ridge along this trail and from there descend into a large valley setting below, where we will rest at a Kharka for the night.
Setting off from the campsite, we can see the perilously located Mumbuk Teahouses on the far side of the valley. The trail then takes us through a nearby forest and descends. Overcoming small streams and exiting the forest, we will follow the Barun Khola to the beautiful pasture of Yangla Kharka.
On this day, you can look forward to yaks for company as we cross the yak pastures and return to Sherpa dwellings. Since we are gradually reaching higher altitudes, we will slow down to allow for acclimatization. We will rest at Langmale Kharka, where a new lodge has been constructed.
Our second major expedition of the itinerary happens today as we head to Makalu Base Camp. We will walk to the southeast ridge of Mt. Makalu and can drink in the spectacular vision that is the mountain itself. The astounding south face of Makalu is in the backdrop as we lunch at the Base Camp and then head back to Langmale Kharka for the night.
From here on out, you can mostly expect to descend. We will descend back into the Barun valley and follow the large expanse of land in the shadows of Peak 6 and 7. We will then climb up to Debotay, being cautious about possible falling rocks in this popular landslide region.
We will almost retrace our steps from Debotay as we climb to Keke La, a pass that opens up to Kalo Pokhari Lake, and then climb again up to Shipton La. An unusual terrain formation lays a stone staircase before us as we follow the trail through rhododendron bushes. Continuing our descent on the winding trail, we will arrive at Khongma.
We will descend almost 2,000m in one go as we plunge from Khongma to Tashigaon Village through Chipla. This region is primarily farmland, and we are greeted on both sides of our trail by terraced fields as we near the familiar village of Seduwa, an important checkpoint for hikers.
We will return to the Arun River from Tashigaon and cut through fields and jungle alike to a suspension bridge across the Arun. By the time we reach the river, we would have descended to a very low altitude. However, a steep ascent to Num is integral to our return to Tumlingtar.
Hikers can choose to either rest on this day or save it for later. Having primarily descended from a great elevation, you may not feel the need to rest for an entire day, but it is a good opportunity to explore the village and interact with the locals.
We will be driven to the town of Tumlingtar across rough terrain by jeeps as we bid farewell to this epic Himalayan journey. With many memories and experiences to treasure, we will happily recount them as we return to civilization through the busy market of Khandbari.
After breakfast, we will fly back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, you can relax or consult your guide to visit more sightseeing places in the city at your leisure.
Today is a free day for you to rest and relax. You can visit some of the heritage sites of Kathmandu that you may have missed, or you can stroll through Thamel and do some last-minute shopping for souvenirs for friends, families, and relatives.
Your long and adventurous journey ends with lots of memorable memories. After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight back to your home country or onward destination. We wish you a safe journey.

Your days on the Kanchenjunga & Makalu Base Camp Trek will follow a rhythm that connects you with Nepal's most remote wilderness, spectacular mountain vistas, and authentic cultural encounters, from lush subtropical forests to high-altitude glaciers, and from traditional villages to challenging high passes.
You'll wake up early (often before sunrise) to maximize daylight hours for trekking. After a hearty breakfast at the teahouse, you'll pack your daypack with essentials (water, snacks, extra layers, camera) and begin your day's trek, typically walking for 5 to 9 hours. On acclimatization days, you'll do shorter hikes to higher elevations before returning to sleep lower.
The scenery changes dramatically as you trek through incredibly diverse landscapes. You'll walk through lush subtropical forests with rhododendron and bamboo, terraced farmland, rocky moraine trails through the pristine Barun Valley, steep stone steps, narrow gorges, and high-altitude alpine meadows. The route leads to Makalu Base Camp, the ultimate destination, and passes through traditional villages like Tashigaon and Seduwa, offering stunning mountain vistas and authentic cultural encounters with Rai, Limbu, and Sherpa communities.
Your trekking day will be punctuated by a lunch break of about an hour at a teahouse along the route, and shorter stops to rest, take photos, hydrate, and soak in the incredible mountain landscapes. Your guide will pace the day appropriately, ensuring you have time to appreciate the views and maintain a sustainable pace, especially at higher altitudes.
You'll arrive at your teahouse destination for the day in the late afternoon. The evenings are for relaxing, enjoying a delicious dinner at the teahouse (typically dal bhat, noodles, or momos), and resting your tired legs. You may spend time interacting with other trekkers, local families, or simply stargazing in the clear mountain sky. During acclimatization days, evenings may include cultural interactions and storytelling with local Kirati, Sherpa, or Tibetan families.
You can expect to stay in a comfortable three-star hotel with double occupancy rooms. Breakfast will be provided.
You'll stay in basic but comfortable teahouses along the trekking route. At lower elevations (Seduwa, Tashigaon), teahouses are more developed with shared bathrooms. At high altitudes (Makalu Base Camp, Langmale Kharka), accommodation is more basic, and tented camps may be used. Rooms typically have two beds, and you'll need your own sleeping bag. The hospitality is warm and welcoming despite the remote location. In Kathmandu, you'll stay in comfortable hotels.
During the trek, your package includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner throughout the entire journey. Meals are prepared fresh at each teahouse, featuring local Nepali cuisine like dal bhat (rice and lentils), noodles, momos, and simple international dishes. At high altitudes, menu options become more limited, but hearty, energy-rich meals are always available. The food is simple but nourishing, designed to fuel your challenging days of trekking.
Hot showers are available at hotel accommodations in Kathmandu and Tumlingtar. On the trek, hot showers may be available at lower elevation teahouses (often for an additional fee), but at high altitudes, hot water is very limited or unavailable. Many trekkers use wet wipes for personal hygiene at high altitude. This is part of the authentic wilderness experience of remote trekking.
Internet connectivity is very limited or non-existent during the trek due to the remote location. In Kathmandu and Tumlingtar, WiFi is available at hotels. On the trek, some lower elevation teahouses may have very basic WiFi (often unreliable and slow), but at high altitudes, there is no internet connectivity. You can purchase a local SIM card (Ncell or NTC) for use in cities, but mobile coverage is very limited or non-existent in the remote Makalu region. This is part of the authentic wilderness experience.
Electricity is available in the villages, often supplemented by solar power. You can charge your electronic devices, though there is usually a small fee for this service. In remote areas, charging may be limited due to power availability and should be used conservatively.
Your trek package includes all necessary transportation:
As you'll be trekking to elevations up to 4,870 meters at Makalu Base Camp (with optional viewpoint at 5,300m), the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is significant. Proper acclimatization is crucial for this high-altitude trek, and it's essential to be aware of altitude-related issues and adapt to varying climates from subtropical forests to high-altitude glaciers.
Altitude symptoms may include headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, shortness of breath, and difficulty sleeping. At these high altitudes, symptoms can be more pronounced and require immediate attention if they worsen.
If any symptoms persist or worsen, inform your guide immediately for appropriate guidance.
At high altitudes, the risk is significant, but you can ensure a safe and successful trek by:

The Kanchenjunga & Makalu Base Camp Trek is an epic 43-day trans-Himalayan expedition that connects the base camps of the world's third-highest mountain, Kanchenjunga (8,586m), and the fifth-highest, Makalu (8,481m), in one continuous journey along the Great Himalayan Trail (GHT). This is one of the most challenging and remote treks in Nepal, designed exclusively for hardcore trekkers who possess superior physical strength, endurance, and a true spirit for adventure.
The journey begins in the far-eastern corner of Nepal, where you'll trek to Pangpema, the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp, to witness the magnificent five peaks of the "Five Great Treasure Houses of Snow." From there, you'll traverse along a significant section of the Great Himalayan Trail, crossing challenging high passes including the Nango La (4,820m) and Lumba Sumba La (5,160m), before reaching your second major objective at Makalu Base Camp. The trek passes adjacent to the Tibetan border, offering rare glimpses into the cultural and geographical landscapes that flow between these two Himalayan nations.
This trek is extremely challenging and requires excellent physical fitness, prior high-altitude trekking experience, and proper preparation. It's ideal for experienced trekkers who have completed multiple challenging treks and are seeking the ultimate Himalayan adventure through some of the most remote, pristine, and least-visited trekking destinations in the entire Himalayas.
The Kanchenjunga & Makalu Base Camp Trek is unique because it is one of the few treks in Nepal that connects two major base camps in one continuous journey along the Great Himalayan Trail. This 43-day expedition takes you to both Pangpema (Kanchenjunga North Base Camp at 5,143m) and Makalu Base Camp (4,900m), making it an ultimate trans-Himalayan adventure that very few trekkers ever complete.
What sets this trek apart is the traverse along the Great Himalayan Trail (GHT), one of the most challenging and remote sections of this legendary route. You'll cross high passes including the Nango La (4,820m) and Lumba Sumba La (5,160m), visit the isolated village of Olangchunngola near the Tibetan border, and experience the unique culture of the Lhomi people in Chyantang. The trek passes through two pristine protected areas - the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area and the Makalu-Barun National Park - offering incredible biodiversity and untouched wilderness.
The remoteness of this trek is unparalleled - for the majority of the GHT section, you'll encounter no other trekkers, creating a profound sense of solitude and adventure. By completing this trek, you'll join a very small handful of trekkers who have ever conquered this remote and challenging section of the Great Himalayan Trail, making it a truly exclusive and extraordinary achievement.
The Kanchenjunga & Makalu Base Camp Trek is rated as extremely challenging and is one of the most demanding treks in Nepal. This 43-day expedition is designed exclusively for hardcore trekkers who possess superior physical strength, endurance, and a true spirit for adventure. The trek reaches elevations above 5,000 meters, crosses multiple high passes, and requires sustained physical effort over more than six weeks.
Difficulty factors:
The Great Himalayan Trail (GHT) is a legendary long-distance trekking route that spans the entire length of Nepal's Himalayas, from the far east to the far west. It is more than just a line on a map; it is a way to experience the raw, untamed beauty of the Himalayas while connecting with the resilient people who call these high valleys home. The Kanchenjunga & Makalu Base Camp Trek follows a significant and challenging section of this legendary route.
How this trek follows the GHT:
The Kanchenjunga & Makalu Base Camp Trek is best done during spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) when weather conditions are most favorable for high-altitude trekking. These seasons offer clear skies, stable weather, and the best mountain views, which are absolutely essential for this extremely challenging 43-day trek that reaches elevations above 5,000 meters and crosses multiple high passes.
The Kanchenjunga & Makalu Base Camp Trek is primarily a camping trek, especially during the Great Himalayan Trail traverse section. While some sections have basic teahouse accommodations, the extreme remoteness of the GHT section requires tented camping. Your trekking agency will provide all necessary camping equipment, and a full support team including guides, porters, and a cook will accompany you throughout the journey.
Accommodation details:
The Kanchenjunga & Makalu Base Camp Trek is a 43-day expedition, including travel days to and from Kathmandu. The actual trekking portion covers approximately 38-39 days of walking, with the remaining days allocated for travel, permit preparation, acclimatization, and rest days. This is one of the longest and most challenging treks in Nepal.
Trek duration breakdown:
The Kanchenjunga & Makalu Base Camp Trek requires special permits because both the Kanchenjunga and Makalu regions are designated as restricted areas by the Nepalese government. This helps preserve the pristine wilderness of both protected areas and limits the number of trekkers, ensuring an authentic wilderness experience. Your tour operator will handle all permit applications, but you need to provide the necessary documentation well in advance.
Required permits and documentation:
The Kanchenjunga & Makalu Base Camp Trek offers incredibly rich and diverse cultural experiences as you journey through the far-eastern region of Nepal. You'll encounter multiple ethnic communities, each with their own unique traditions, customs, and ways of life that have been preserved due to the region's remoteness. This cultural immersion is one of the trek's most rewarding aspects.
Cultural communities and experiences:
The Kanchenjunga & Makalu Base Camp Trek offers a unique and exceptional experience that sets it apart from all other treks in Nepal. While popular routes like Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Circuit are well-trodden and crowded, this trek provides the ultimate trans-Himalayan adventure that very few trekkers ever experience. It is one of the most challenging, remote, and rewarding treks in the entire Himalayas.
