Are you dreaming of an extraordinary and truly magical Himalayan adventure—one that leads you far from the usual trails and deep into one of the wildest and least-explored corners of Nepal? The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek offers exactly that: an epic journey into the remote eastern Himalayas, where nature remains untouched and ancient traditions continue to thrive. This remarkable trek takes you to the foot of Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586m), the world's third-highest mountain, guiding you through landscapes of raw beauty and authentic culture that feel worlds away from the crowded paths of the Everest and Annapurna regions.
The Kanchenjunga region is protected as a restricted area, requiring special permits—one of the key reasons the trails remain peaceful and pristine. This exclusivity has preserved the region's deep cultural heritage and unique environment, allowing trekkers to experience a Nepal that feels lost in time. As you make your way toward the base camp, you'll wander through lush rhododendron forests, open alpine meadows, roaring river valleys, and charming villages where the hospitality is warm, genuine, and deeply rooted in tradition.
Wildlife thrives here unlike anywhere else in the Himalayas. The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area is home to an incredible range of flora and fauna, including the elusive red panda, blue sheep, musk deer, Himalayan black bear, and, if fortune favors you, even the mysterious snow leopard. Local folklore adds yet another magical dimension to the trek—stories of the fabled Yeti linger in the high, secluded valleys, bringing a sense of mystery to every step of the journey.
Throughout the trek, the mountain views are nothing short of spectacular. On your approach to the Kanchenjunga Base Camp, you'll be surrounded by towering giants such as the dramatic Mt. Jannu (Kumbhakarna), the gleaming Yalung Glacier, and of course, the awe-inspiring Kanchenjunga itself. From high ridges, you may even catch sight of distant eight-thousanders like Everest, Makalu, and Lhotse standing in perfect harmony across the horizon.
The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is demanding and remote, ideal for experienced trekkers seeking a raw and authentic Himalayan challenge. But the reward is immense: a deep sense of accomplishment, a profound connection with nature, and memories of untouched wilderness that stay with you for a lifetime. This is not just a trek—it is an adventure into one of the last great wild sanctuaries of the Himalayas.
Your 20-day Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is an epic and challenging expedition that leads you to the base camps on both the north and south sides of the world's third-highest mountain, Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586m). This journey takes you deep into the remote and pristine wilderness of Nepal's far-eastern region, crossing high Himalayan passes, exploring traditional villages, and experiencing the unique cultures of the Kirati and Sherpa people. Each day is carefully planned to ensure proper acclimatization, safety, and an unforgettable adventure through one of the most spectacular and less-traveled regions of the Himalayas.
You will land at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu after your fantastic flight. Our airport representative will greet you at the arrival terminal, transfer you to your designated hotel, and help you check in. In the evening, you can stroll around the vibrant Thamel area, the top tourist hub of Nepal.
Today, the team management will meet you to take your original passport for the preparation of your restricted area permits. Your guide will also meet you to check the trekking equipment you have and suggest anything you might need to buy or rent from the shops in Thamel. In the afternoon, you have the option for a sightseeing tour of Kathmandu's UNESCO World Heritage sites.
We will take the earliest flight to Bhadrapur from Kathmandu today. After a 45-minute flight, we will land and meet our supporting crew. From the airport, we will drive directly to Taplejung for the night, passing via the beautiful lush tea gardens of Kanyam and Fikkal in Ilam. As we approach our guesthouse, we will be welcomed by black cardamom forests.
We will have our breakfast and catch a local jeep for our second day of riding to reach our destination, Sekathum. By utilizing the available jeep services, we save two days of walking. The drive will take us through Mitlung, Chirwa, and Lelep, along the Tamor Nadi. We will stop at the Kanchenjunga National Park entry point, where our permits will be checked.
After two days of driving, we will start our hike today. The adventurous journey begins with an ascent along the Ghunsa Khola, walking over many bridges and exploring through verdant trees and the little settlements of Jonggim and Ghaiyabari before reaching the remote village of Amjilosa.
We will move forward to Gyabla, which is also known as Kyapra, from Amjilosa after breakfast. We will continue our path through a dense forest on a trail without human settlement. Today, we might spot Red Pandas during our hike. After an uphill climb, we will be rewarded with magnificent sceneries of the mountains and several waterfalls on the way before we slowly make our way to Gyabla village.
The walk through the woodlands with a wide range of flora and fauna leads us to the village of Phale. Continuing the trek at a steady pace, we will reach the large and prosperous Sherpa village of Ghunsa, the main hub of the region. Many trekkers stop at Ghunsa for acclimatization, but we will have our rest day higher up in Khambachen.
We will have our breakfast and begin a gradual ascent through an open pine forest, where we will have the chance to spot blue sheep and, if we are very lucky, a snow leopard. The trail passes through some landslide-prone areas. We will see a spectacular view of Mt. Jannu and encounter green glacier valleys before finally reaching Khambachen village.
We will rest at Khambachen today after several days of walking. For the adjustment of the body to the altitude, we will have a short but spectacular optional hike up the Nupchu Khola towards the Jannu shrine at 4,400m for incredible, close-up views of the formidable Jannu peak.
Today, we will move ahead onto the trail of the Kanchenjunga glacier. We will move through Ramdang and come across the Ramdang Monastery. The trail is difficult now at the junction of the Lhonak and Kanchenjunga glaciers. Walking forward, we will reach the tiny settlement of Lhonak, a high and remote pasture with only a few teahouses.
Today, we will hike to the north base camp of Mt. Kanchenjunga, also known as Pangpema. We will climb gradually, following the moraines through the trail, to reach the base camp. The prayer flags fluttering around and the mesmerizing, towering third-highest mountain, Kanchenjunga, is the ultimate reward. We will then return to Lhonak for our overnight stay.
Rejoicing in the views of the Himalayas and leaving behind the Kanchenjunga Base Camp, we will retrace our track all the way back down to the village of Ghunsa. The descent will be much easier, and the Kanchenjunga trail will give us memories of walking past stone huts, soaring mountain peaks, and rocky fields.
We will arrive at Sele Le Base Camp, leaving the trail to Gyabla. There is a chance to see snow leopards as we pass through the dense forest. There are isolated human settlements with a few teahouses which are open only in the main trekking season. This camp will position us for the challenging pass crossings tomorrow.
Leaving Sele Le, we will hike up to the high-altitude passes of Sinion La, Mirgin La, and Sinelapche Bhanjyang. We will see a spectacular panoramic view of Mt. Jannu, Everest, and Makalu during our ascent. From the final pass, we will descend steeply to the beautiful valley of Tseram and stay overnight.
Today, after an early morning breakfast, we will head forward through the Yalung glacier. Passing by Ramche, which provides views of Rathong and Kabru, we will stop for a packed lunch. We will then hike to Oktang, the viewpoint for the Yalung or Kanchenjunga South Base Camp. Enjoying the closer view of the three summits of Mt. Kanchenjunga, we will return to Tseram.
The elevated snow-capped mountains will be behind us as we walk through beautiful rhododendron forests, which gives us a sense of tranquility. Our trek starts downhill and ends at the small settlement of Tortong, passing through Simbuwa Khola with enchanting views of the Himalayas en route.
From Tortong, we will continue to descend, passing through Lasiya Bhanjyang and Dhupi Bhanjyang. After walking past a steep slope area, we will reach the large, multi-ethnic village of Yamphudin. There is a Kanchenjunga Conservation Area checkpost here, where our permits will be checked.
After having breakfast in Yamphudin, we will start exploring beautiful landscapes through the trails and trekking alongside the pathway of the Kabeli Khola. Leaving the mountain villages behind, we will descend to a lower altitude, arriving at the village of Kanyam. Keeping the bittersweet memories of the trek at high altitudes, we are now in the lowlands.
We will have our breakfast and then have a 2-3 hour drive to Bhadrapur. We will then take a 45 to 50-minute flight from Bhadrapur back to Kathmandu in the late afternoon and will drop you at your hotel. You will have the evening free to relax and celebrate your incredible achievement.
Your Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek ends today. 3 hours before your scheduled flight, you will be transferred to the airport by our representative for your final departure. We wish you a safe journey and hope to assist you again.

Your days on the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek will follow a rhythm that connects you with Nepal's most remote wilderness, spectacular mountain vistas, and authentic cultural encounters, from lush subtropical forests to high-altitude glaciers, and from traditional villages to challenging high passes.
You'll wake up early (often before sunrise) to maximize daylight hours for trekking. After a hearty breakfast at the teahouse, you'll pack your daypack with essentials (water, snacks, extra layers, camera) and begin your day's trek, typically walking for 5 to 9 hours. On acclimatization days, you'll do shorter hikes to higher elevations before returning to sleep lower.
The scenery changes dramatically as you trek through incredibly diverse landscapes. You'll walk through lush subtropical forests with rhododendron and bamboo, terraced farmland, rocky moraine trails alongside the Kanchenjunga Glacier, steep stone steps, narrow gorges, and high-altitude alpine meadows. The route leads to Pangpema Base Camp, the ultimate destination, and passes through traditional villages like Ghunsa, offering stunning mountain vistas and authentic cultural encounters.
Your trekking day will be punctuated by a lunch break of about an hour at a teahouse along the route, and shorter stops to rest, take photos, hydrate, and soak in the incredible mountain landscapes. Your guide will pace the day appropriately, ensuring you have time to appreciate the views and maintain a sustainable pace, especially at higher altitudes.
You'll arrive at your teahouse destination for the day in the late afternoon. The evenings are for relaxing, enjoying a delicious dinner at the teahouse (typically dal bhat, noodles, or momos), and resting your tired legs. You may spend time interacting with other trekkers, local families, or simply stargazing in the clear mountain sky. During acclimatization days, evenings may include cultural interactions and storytelling with local Kirati, Sherpa, or Tibetan families.
You can expect to stay in a comfortable three-star hotel with double occupancy rooms. Breakfast will be provided.
You'll stay in basic but comfortable teahouses along the trekking route. At lower elevations (Sekathum, Amjilosa), teahouses are more developed with shared bathrooms. At high altitudes (Lhonak, Sele La Base Camp), accommodation is more basic, and tented camps may be used. Rooms typically have two beds, and you'll need your own sleeping bag. The hospitality is warm and welcoming despite the remote location. In Kathmandu, you'll stay in comfortable hotels.
During the trek, your package includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner throughout the entire journey. Meals are prepared fresh at each teahouse, featuring local Nepali cuisine like dal bhat (rice and lentils), noodles, momos, and simple international dishes. At high altitudes, menu options become more limited, but hearty, energy-rich meals are always available. The food is simple but nourishing, designed to fuel your challenging days of trekking.
Hot showers are available at hotel accommodations in Kathmandu and Bhadrapur. On the trek, hot showers may be available at lower elevation teahouses (often for an additional fee), but at high altitudes, hot water is very limited or unavailable. Many trekkers use wet wipes for personal hygiene at high altitude. This is part of the authentic wilderness experience of remote trekking.
Internet connectivity is very limited or non-existent during the trek due to the remote location. In Kathmandu and Bhadrapur, WiFi is available at hotels. On the trek, some lower elevation teahouses may have very basic WiFi (often unreliable and slow), but at high altitudes, there is no internet connectivity. You can purchase a local SIM card (Ncell or NTC) for use in cities, but mobile coverage is very limited or non-existent in the remote Kanchenjunga region. This is part of the authentic wilderness experience.
Electricity is available in the villages, often supplemented by solar power. You can charge your electronic devices, though there is usually a small fee for this service. In remote areas, charging may be limited due to power availability and should be used conservatively.
Your trek package includes all necessary transportation:
As you'll be trekking to elevations up to 5,143 meters at Pangpema Base Camp, the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is significant. Proper acclimatization is crucial for this high-altitude trek, and it's essential to be aware of altitude-related issues and adapt to varying climates from subtropical forests to high-altitude glaciers.
Altitude symptoms may include headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, shortness of breath, and difficulty sleeping. At these high altitudes, symptoms can be more pronounced and require immediate attention if they worsen.
If any symptoms persist or worsen, inform your guide immediately for appropriate guidance.
At high altitudes, the risk is significant, but you can ensure a safe and successful trek by:

For the Nepal Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek, the following permits are required:
The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is an epic 20-day expedition that takes you to Pangpema, the North Base Camp of Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586m) - the world's third-highest mountain. This is one of Nepal's most remote and challenging treks, leading you deep into the pristine wilderness of the far-eastern Himalayas, far from the crowds of more popular routes like Everest or Annapurna.
Why choose this trek:
The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek follows a spectacular route through Nepal's most remote wilderness, taking you from the lower valleys through diverse landscapes to reach Pangpema at 5,143 meters. The journey showcases incredible biodiversity, authentic cultural encounters, and progressively stunning mountain views as you approach the base camp.
Key destinations and route highlights:
The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is rated as challenging to very challenging, requiring excellent physical fitness, prior high-altitude trekking experience, and strong mental determination. This is a long and demanding trek that takes you to 5,143 meters at Pangpema Base Camp, with daily walks of 6-8 hours through rough and remote terrain.
Fitness and experience requirements:
The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is best done during spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) when weather conditions are most favorable for high-altitude trekking. These seasons offer clear skies, stable weather, and the best mountain views, which are essential for this challenging trek that reaches elevations above 5,000 meters.
The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek offers a completely different experience from the popular Everest Base Camp Trek. While both are challenging high-altitude treks, the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is significantly more remote, less crowded, and takes you to the base of the world's third-highest mountain rather than the first. This trek offers true wilderness solitude and pristine landscapes that are increasingly rare in Nepal's more popular trekking regions.
Key differences:
Proper packing is essential for a successful Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek. Since the trek takes you through varied climates and elevations - from subtropical forests at 1,820m to high-altitude glaciers at 5,143m - you'll need versatile clothing and gear suitable for all conditions, including cold weather gear for high altitudes and lighter clothing for lower elevations.
Essential items to pack:
The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek includes comfortable hotel accommodation in Kathmandu and Bhadrapur, and basic teahouse accommodation along the trekking route. Due to the remote nature of this trek, teahouses are simpler than those on more popular routes, but they provide essential shelter, meals, and warmth. At high-altitude locations like Lhonak, tented camps may be used.
Accommodation and meals:
The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is a 20-day expedition covering approximately 200-220 kilometers of trekking distance, taking you through incredibly diverse terrains from subtropical forests to high-altitude glaciers. The trek involves daily walks of 4-8 hours, with the most challenging day being the ascent to Pangpema Base Camp at 5,143 meters.
Trek distance and terrain details:
The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is rated as challenging to very challenging, making it one of Nepal's most demanding treks. This is a long, remote, and physically demanding expedition that requires excellent fitness, prior high-altitude experience, and strong mental determination. The trek reaches 5,143 meters at Pangpema Base Camp, making it one of the highest base camp treks in Nepal.
Difficulty factors:
The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek requires special permits because the region is designated as a restricted area by the Nepalese government. This helps preserve the pristine wilderness and limits the number of trekkers, ensuring an authentic wilderness experience. Your tour operator will handle all permit applications, but you need to provide the necessary documentation.
