Are you searching for a true wilderness adventure, a journey into a remote and rarely visited corner of the Himalayas that has received far less attention than it deserves? The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is an epic and adventurous expedition that leads you to the base camps on both the north and south sides of the world's third-highest mountain, the magnificent Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586m). This is a journey for the seasoned trekker, a solitary and incredible route through a land of exotic forests, cascading waterfalls, and a profound sense of natural joy.
Kanchenjunga is located in the far eastern region of Nepal, on the border with the small Himalayan state of Sikkim in India. Until the mid-1800s, this colossal peak was actually believed to be the tallest in the world. The region was off-limits to foreign hikers until the mid-1980s, and this history of isolation has preserved its pristine beauty and unique cultural heritage. Exploring and savoring the outdoors in this area is an unparalleled pleasure, offering a diverse range of vegetation and some of the most spectacular mountain vistas in the entire Himalayas. A fascinating detail about this region is that it is believed to be the home of the "Yeti," the legendary beast of the Himalayas.
This is a long and challenging trek, but it is not impossible. It is an incredible, multi-day journey that takes you deep into the high Himalayas, following a rough and remote terrain with multiple ascents and descents. You will be walking for more than three weeks through rural settlements, which requires a high level of both physical and mental fitness. Your trek begins in the lower foothills and progressively climbs to its highest point at the Pangpema (North) Base Camp at 5,143 meters. Along the way, you will cross several difficult high mountain passes, and each day, you will need to walk for about 7 to 8 hours.
The scenery is replete with powerful rivers, cascading waterfalls, lush meadows, and enchanting forests of rhododendron, birch, and pine. You will be constantly accompanied by the stunning presence of the mountains themselves. The region is home to a diverse community of Sherpa and Kirati (Limbu and Rai) people, providing a wonderful opportunity to learn about their unique culture and way of life. Because of its remote location and the length of the walk, there are far fewer trekkers in the Kanchenjunga region. This means you will be mesmerized by a natural heritage that has seen very little human interference, creating a tough but deeply rewarding adventure that will provide you with a wealth of exciting and unforgettable memories to last a lifetime.
A 26-day epic and challenging expedition to both the north and south base camps of Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586m), the world's third-highest mountain. Journey through Nepal's remote far-eastern wilderness, crossing high Himalayan passes, exploring traditional villages, and experiencing the unique cultures of the Kirati and Sherpa people in one of the Himalayas' most spectacular and less-traveled regions.
You will land at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu after your fantastic flight. Our airport representative will greet you at the arrival terminal, transfer you to your designated hotel, and help you check in. In the evening, you can stroll around the vibrant Thamel area, the top tourist hub of Nepal.
After a warm breakfast, we will discuss your trip before you spend the morning exploring some of Kathmandu's World Heritage Sites. We will explore famous places like Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, and if time permits, Patan Durbar Square. In the afternoon, you can go shopping for any last-minute trekking gear in the Thamel area.
We will take the earliest flight to Bhadrapur from Kathmandu today. After a 45-minute flight, we will land at Bhadrapur Airport, where you will meet your supporting crew. From the airport, we will drive directly to Taplejung for the night, passing via the beautiful lush tea gardens of Ilam.
We start our trekking journey today from Taplejung to Chiruwa, beginning with a downhill walk along the Tamor River. We will take a break for tea or coffee along the way, then continue walking on a flat road. We will get to observe the small communities of the Kirat people and their way of life before reaching the small settlement of Chiruwa.
After our delightful breakfast at Chiruwa, we begin our walk by crossing a suspension bridge over the river and entering the conservation area. We will walk along the bank of the Tamor River into a cardamom garden, coming across beautiful traditional villages, terraced farms, and numerous waterfalls before reaching Sukethum.
We will be hiking through a man-made stone steps trail today. The first half consists primarily of uphill treks, while the second segment consists of difficult and steep climbs. Our trail ascends from the Kirati communities in the lower region to the Sherpa settlements. We will take lunch on the riverbank at Lamatar before continuing uphill to Amjilosa.
We begin our journey early in the morning on rocky stone steps, passing by landslides and spectacular waterfalls. Our difficult ascent continues through a thickly forested zone of dense rhododendron and old oak trees. We will get our first mountain view of the Kumbhakarna/Jannu Peak from here before reaching the beautiful Tibetan-influenced village of Gyabla.
Today's trek takes us through a broad valley with larch and juniper forests. We will pass through the village of Phole, where you can visit a beautiful monastery. The trail continues with stunning views of the surrounding peaks before a final, gentle walk brings us to the large and prosperous Sherpa village of Ghunsa, the main hub of the region.
We will spend an extra day in Ghunsa to rest and acclimate to the high altitude. For acclimatization purposes, we will hike up to a viewpoint above the settlement, which takes about 4 hours round trip and offers incredible views. We'll spend the rest of the day wandering around this Tibetan village and interacting with the inhabitants.
We leave Ghunsa and start our trek through a pine and rhododendron forest, passing Buddhist mani walls and chortens. The mountain scenery becomes more intense today with the north face of Jannu dominating the view. We will cross a landslide area with caution before descending to the Tibetan village of Khambachen.
Khambachen is our second acclimatization point. The spectacular vistas of Mount Jannu are well worth the optional, challenging 5 to 6-hour hike up the Nupchu Khola to a shrine at 4,400m, which serves as a viewpoint for Jannu Base Camp.
With a challenging day ahead, we will start our trek early, passing through an impressive rocky field with large boulders. We will reach a waterfall and a river, and after crossing another landslide zone, we will take some rest at Ramtang Monastery. A final descent to another river brings us to the high, remote pasture of Lhonak, where we get our first glimpse of Mount Kanchenjunga.
An early start for the walk to Pangpema, the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp, for magnificent views of Kanchenjunga's main peak with Wedge Peak and Tent Peak. The stony, slight uphill trail follows a moraine for much of its length. After exploring the main destination of our journey, we will return to Lhonak for the night.
We will begin our return journey today, retracing our steps all the way back down the valley to the familiar and comfortable village of Ghunsa. The descent will be much easier, and we will enjoy magnificent views that were previously behind us.
After breakfast, we will leave Ghunsa and follow a steep stone-step trail, ascending through a beautiful rhododendron and pine forest. Our walk goes through natural stone steps, with mountain views and numerous waterfalls. We will gradually ascend to the camp at the base of the Sele La pass.
Today's hike takes us on a hard roller-coaster ride, passing via three high passes: the Sele La, the Mirgin La, and the Sinion La. The Mirgin La offers the best view of Mount Kanchenjunga. The descent after the last pass is steep but brief. As we climb through the region, Everest and Makalu contribute to the incredible view before us.
After breakfast, we begin our short trek to Ramche. We will climb through jungles on a stone mountain trail for a while before reaching the snout of the Yalung Glacier. Before arriving in Ramche, we will travel past Lapsang village and walk on a completely flat trail. Once we reach Ramche, we will rest for a bit and visit a small monastery there.
Early in the morning, we will follow a flat trail across the valley and yak pastures to reach the Oktang viewpoint, which serves as the south base camp of Mount Kanchenjunga. The views of the Himalayas from Oktang are breathtaking; the entire cirque is above 7,500 meters. After spending some time here, we will trek back to Ramche for the night.
After breakfast at Ramche, we will return to Tseram by retracing our track, with stunning mountain views along the route. This will be a rather easy walk, with the majority of it being downhill. We will continue walking to Tortong along a river on a stony mountain trail, passing through a beautiful rhododendron forest.
We will leave Tortong after breakfast and follow a trail ascending through a forest of rhododendron and pine, and a landslide zone. It takes roughly 3 hours to get to Lamite Bhanjyang for lunch. After lunch, the track descends for about 2 hours on a decent path. Before plunging into Yamphudin, the trail contours around a slope, passing some streams and entering a gorge.
Today will be another long day of trekking, descending through the beautiful and culturally rich villages of the Limbu people. We will enjoy the terraced farms and vibrant colors of the lower elevations as we slowly wind our way down to the village of Khebang.
On our final day of trekking, we will hike through more Limbu towns and a steady patchwork of agriculture and meadows, with the smiling faces of the ever-curious local people welcoming us as we pass by. Our arrival in Hapu Khola allows us to unwind and reflect on an incredible adventure across Nepal's most remote districts.
Leaving Hapu Khola, we will set out on a long but scenic drive on a bumpy mountain road towards Taplejung, and then continue all the way down to the plains of Bhadrapur for the night.
Early in the morning, we will transfer you to the airport in Bhadrapur for your flight back to Kathmandu. On arrival, you will be escorted to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to relax and rest.
This is a leisure day to relax and rest your tired legs. You can visit a spa, or go souvenir shopping in the markets of Thamel. In the evening, you will be picked up for a farewell meal organized by our team at a Nepali restaurant, where we will share our experiences and enjoy a cultural program.

Your days on the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek will follow a rhythm that connects you with Nepal's most remote wilderness, spectacular mountain vistas, and authentic cultural encounters, from lush subtropical forests to high-altitude glaciers, and from traditional villages to challenging high passes.
You'll wake up early (often before sunrise) to maximize daylight hours for trekking. After a hearty breakfast at the teahouse, you'll pack your daypack with essentials (water, snacks, extra layers, camera) and begin your day's trek, typically walking for 5 to 9 hours. On acclimatization days, you'll do shorter hikes to higher elevations before returning to sleep lower.
The scenery changes dramatically as you trek through incredibly diverse landscapes. You'll walk through lush subtropical forests with rhododendron and bamboo, terraced farmland, rocky moraine trails alongside glaciers, steep stone steps, narrow gorges, and high-altitude alpine meadows. The route leads to both base camps of Kanchenjunga, crosses challenging high passes, and passes through traditional villages like Ghunsa, offering stunning mountain vistas and authentic cultural encounters.
Your trekking day will be punctuated by a lunch break of about an hour at a teahouse along the route, and shorter stops to rest, take photos, hydrate, and soak in the incredible mountain landscapes. Your guide will pace the day appropriately, ensuring you have time to appreciate the views and maintain a sustainable pace, especially at higher altitudes.
You'll arrive at your teahouse destination for the day in the late afternoon. The evenings are for relaxing, enjoying a delicious dinner at the teahouse (typically dal bhat, noodles, or momos), and resting your tired legs. You may spend time interacting with other trekkers, local families, or simply stargazing in the clear mountain sky. During acclimatization days, evenings may include cultural interactions and storytelling with local Kirati, Sherpa, or Tibetan families.
You can expect to stay in a comfortable three-star hotel with double occupancy rooms. Breakfast will be provided.
You'll stay in basic but comfortable teahouses along the trekking route. At lower elevations (Chiruwa, Sukethum, Amjilosa), teahouses are more developed with shared bathrooms. At high altitudes (Lhonak, Sele La Base Camp), accommodation is more basic, and tented camps may be used. Rooms typically have two beds, and you'll need your own sleeping bag. The hospitality is warm and welcoming despite the remote location. In Bhadrapur (Day 23), you'll stay in a comfortable hotel.
During the trek, your package includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner throughout the entire journey. Meals are prepared fresh at each teahouse, featuring local Nepali cuisine like dal bhat (rice and lentils), noodles, momos, and simple international dishes. At high altitudes, menu options become more limited, but hearty, energy-rich meals are always available. The food is simple but nourishing, designed to fuel your challenging days of trekking.
Hot showers are available at hotel accommodations in Kathmandu and Bhadrapur. On the trek, hot showers may be available at lower elevation teahouses (often for an additional fee), but at high altitudes, hot water is very limited or unavailable. Many trekkers use wet wipes for personal hygiene at high altitude. This is part of the authentic wilderness experience of remote trekking.
Internet connectivity is very limited or non-existent during the trek due to the remote location. In Kathmandu and Bhadrapur, WiFi is available at hotels. On the trek, some lower elevation teahouses may have very basic WiFi (often unreliable and slow), but at high altitudes, there is no internet connectivity. You can purchase a local SIM card (Ncell or NTC) for use in cities, but mobile coverage is very limited or non-existent in the remote Kanchenjunga region. This is part of the authentic wilderness experience.
Electricity is available in the villages, often supplemented by solar power. You can charge your electronic devices, though there is usually a small fee for this service. In remote areas, charging may be limited due to power availability and should be used conservatively.
Your trek package includes all necessary transportation:
As you'll be trekking to elevations up to 5,143 meters at Pangpema Base Camp, the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is significant, and it's crucial to be aware of altitude-related issues and adapt to varying climates from subtropical forests to high-altitude glaciers.
Altitude symptoms may include headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, shortness of breath, and difficulty sleeping. At these high altitudes, symptoms can be more pronounced and require immediate attention if they worsen.
If any symptoms persist or worsen, inform your guide immediately for appropriate guidance.
At high altitudes, the risk is significant, but you can ensure a safe and comfortable trek by:
