The Langtang Helambu Trek is one of the most diverse and rewarding trekking experiences in Nepal, perfectly combining the spectacular high-altitude scenery of the Langtang Valley, the sacred pilgrimage site of Gosaikunda Lakes, and the rich cultural tapestry of the Helambu region. This incredible journey offers a complete Himalayan adventure, taking you through an astonishing variety of landscapes, from lush subtropical forests to barren alpine tundra, all while offering a more peaceful and authentic experience away from the more crowded trails of Everest and the Annapurnas.
Your grand adventure begins with an enthralling road expedition from Kathmandu to the mountain town of Syabrubesi. From here, your trek on foot commences, leading you into the "Valley of Glaciers." You will follow the Langtang Khola river upstream, walking through enchanting villages inhabited by the Tamang and Sherpa people. The trail takes you through the heart of Langtang National Park, Nepal's first Himalayan national park, a pristine wilderness with opportunities to spot rare wildlife like the elusive red panda and Himalayan black bear.
The trek culminates in the upper valley at the sacred site of Kyanjin Gompa. Here, surrounded by a breathtaking amphitheater of snow-capped peaks, you will have a day to acclimatize and explore. The highlight for many is the triumphant, non-technical ascent of Kyanjin Ri (4,773m), a spectacular viewpoint that offers an unforgettable, 360-degree panorama of the entire Langtang Himalayan range, including Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lhakpa, and many more.
From the Langtang Valley, the journey continues with a challenging and spectacular crossing of the Laurebinayak Pass (4,610m). This high pass brings you into the sacred realm of the Gosaikunda Lakes. You will have time to explore these serene and holy alpine lakes, a site of immense spiritual significance for both Hindus and Buddhists, believed to have been created by the god Shiva himself.
The final leg of your trek takes you into the culturally rich and less-visited Helambu region. You will descend through beautiful forests and charming agricultural villages, experiencing the unique culture of the local communities before your trail finally concludes at Sundarijal on the outskirts of the Kathmandu Valley. This trek is a truly magnificent journey that showcases the incredible diversity of the Nepalese Himalayas.
Here is a user-friendly and highly detailed day-by-day itinerary for your incredible 15-days Langtang Helambu Trek, formatted to be informative, engaging, and easy to follow.
Welcome to the capital of heaven, the Himalayas, and adventure! Our representative will be at the TIA arrival gate to accompany you in a private vehicle to your cozy accommodation. Take your time to settle in and explore the city's colorful alleys and rich history. After all participants have arrived, our guide will meet you all and provide a short explanation of the itinerary ahead. In the evening, you can celebrate the beginning of your new adventure with the first taste of Dal Bhat or Momos.
Get ready early in the morning for an exciting road journey to your first mountain village of Syabrubesi. A private jeep or a bus will take us out of Kathmandu, guiding us toward the bustling Trishuli Market. After a brief refreshment, we will continue driving along the widely stretched Pasang Lhamu Highway. The route from here is truly spectacular, ascending along the ridges. The beautiful mountain hamlet of Rani Pauwa will be traversed before we reach Dhunche, where our papers will be inspected, marking our official entry into Langtang National Park. The road will continue to twist, rise, and descend, until we reach Syabrubesi.
In the early morning, we will begin our adventure of walking. We will come across our first two suspended steel bridges, both crossing the Bhote Koshi River. The gorgeous Langtang Khola will then show us our way to Dhomen Village. The climbing trail will ascend through a jungle valley of huge rhododendrons and towering conifers until we arrive at Bamboo. After some well-deserved refreshments, we will start to climb the long, steep stone steps. After two hours of effort, Rimche village will greet us, from where Lama Hotel is just a stone's throw away.
Enjoying the company of the playful waters of Langtang Khola, we will begin ascending through the green landscape of Langtang forest. Shortly, we will be once again showing our permits to the officials at the Nepal Army Checkpost located at Ghumanchok. The gigantic crimson rhododendrons will decorate our continuously climbing path until we reach Chunama. The magnificent 7,225m high summit of Langtang Lirung will make us pause our adventure for a while. This rest will prepare us for the rapidly and sharply climbing trail that will take us to a 3,000m elevation at Ghoratabela. The forward track now slowly goes down to Thangshyap before we reach the new Langtang Valley.
Our upward journey will continue today as we travel to the 3,543m high Mundu Village. You can now feel the humid and green landscape has transitioned into the dry, arid terrain of the Tibetan plateaus. Walking through the picturesque yak meadows of Singdun and Yemphu, we will soon reach Kyanjin Gompa. It is the final settlement in the Langtang Valley that provides access to several paths leading to various glaciers and summits. The area also hosts a beautiful monastery and a government-funded yak cheese factory.
On this day, we will reach the highlight of our trek as we climb to the peak of Kyanjin Ri at 4,773m. Its ascent is not technical, and no equipment is needed; all that is required is your perseverance to climb the rugged, stony trail for about an hour or two. Being located in a strategic position in the heart of a mountainous landscape, its summit opens up unbelievable views of Langtang Lirung glacier, Tsergo Peak, and Yala Peak. Filling our memory box with the precious spectacle, we will now return with happy hearts to our lodge in Kyanjin Gompa.
From today, we will set on the beginning of a new journey towards Gosaikunda and Helambu. The path today is predominately descending, which will bring us closer to the already-known surroundings of Mundu, Ghumba, Thangshyap, and Ghoratabela before we finally reach the welcoming lodge of Lama Hotel. This easier day of walking allows you to enjoy the scenery from a different perspective as you make your way down the valley.
Our once loyal friend, the Langtang Khola, will soon welcome us again and guide us down to Rimche, from where we will walk down steadily to Bamboo. Get ready to climb sharply along a twisting track for a while, then we will head down to a canyon where a long and high suspended bridge will be waiting for us. After carefully crossing the bridge, the track ahead will carry us above a small hill. With great delight, we will see Ganesh Himal penetrating the cloudless sky. After climbing down from the ridge, we will get on with our walk up until we reach the beautiful ridgetop village of Thulo Syabru.
Our trail will continue to climb as we aim to reach Shin Gumba today, better known as Chandanbari. Our upward journey will soon lead us to Dursagang. Next, we will push ourselves to the 3,210m height of Foprong Danda, where Ganesh Himal reveals its beauty from all angles. A forest trail from Dhimsa will then lead us to Shin Gumba, a spiritual settlement with a local monastery and cheese factory, where the atmosphere is simply filled with religious vibes.
After we depart from Shin Gumba, our ascent continues along a small ridge until we reach Chalang Pati. We then need to tackle a steepened trail that rises hastily to Laurebinayak. This place is simply incredibly blessed by not only the massive peaks of Ganesh and Langtang but also by Annapurna and the double summit of Manaslu. The trail keeps rising, twisting and turning, taking us to the enormous height of the Gosaikunda Pass. The high-altitude environment is visible now as we advance to the first of the Gosaikunda Lakes, Saraswati Kunda, followed by Bhairav Kunda and Gosaikunda itself.
We will devote our morning to discovering the beautiful terrain of Gosaikunda. After that, we will walk along an inclined pathway that will soon direct us to a grassy meadow, passing the remaining four lakes of Gosaikunda. Their beauties will captivate our senses, and in no time, we will be at the top of the highest elevation of our trek: the grand Laurebinayak Pass at 4,610m. This Pass marks our entrance into the Helambu land. A 900m descent will take us to the tail of this pass, known as Phedi, and a series of ascents and descents follows until we settle ourselves at the lodge of Ghopte.
Early in the morning, we will exit Ghopte and indulge in a brief descent before we ascend the track, passing through a rich pine and cypress forest. A more challenging steep terrain will take us to the heights of Thadepati. Now, we will go down slowly, enjoying the cool breeze coming through the rhododendron and pine trees. We will pass through Magin Goth, from where we will have to climb a little to Kuala Bhanjyang. The remaining trail is mainly downhill now until we make it to the village of Kutumsang, located in Shivapuri National Park.
From Kutumsang, we will trek up a hill and walk down to Gul Bhanjyang. A dusty road will take us to another ridge at 2,500m known as Thorong Danda. After descending from this hill, we will arrive in Chipping village. We will then slowly make our way down to Pati Bhanjyang, from where the popular viewpoint of Chisapani is just at a short distance. This spot is famous for its sunrise and sunset views over the Himalayas.
Gazing at the magical Gaurishankar and Langtang Himals, we will eat our last mountain breakfast. Then, we will head along a picturesque trail winding through the lush forest of Shivapuri National Park. Shortly, we will arrive at an army checkpoint from where we will exit the park and walk for a while to reach Mulkharka. Stone steps will now guide us down to Sundarijal, where you can see a dazzling waterfall. We will find our vehicle calmly waiting for us to take us back to the urbanization of Kathmandu. In the evening, we will celebrate with an authentic Nepali farewell dinner.
It is now time to say farewell to the magnificent Himalayas and all the friends you have made during your stay. We hope every moment you have spent in this paradise has formed a memory to treasure. Our car will transfer you to Kathmandu International Airport three hours before your flight for your journey home. Namaste! Until we meet again.

Trails range from forest paths and stone steps to high, windy ridgelines where weather can change quickly. The right gear keeps you comfortable across variable temperatures and the pass day—use this checklist to pack confidently.
Please note: You don't need to bring heavy gear like sleeping bags, down jackets, or trekking poles from home. Quality gear is easy to rent or buy in Kathmandu (Thamel). Basic items may be available in Syabrubesi, but selection is limited—plan rentals in Kathmandu during your pre‑trek briefing.
You'll find items from renowned international brands like The North Face, Sherpa Adventure, Marmot, Mountain Hardwear, Black Yak, Karma Gear, as well as trusted local brands such as Goldstar and other locally made products.
Rental Cost:
Sleeping Bag & Down Jacket (suitable for -10°C to -20°C): USD 1.5 per piece, per day
No technical climbing is required. Expect a moderate trek with sustained daily climbs and one big pass day over Laurebina La (~4,610m), plus long descents into Helambu.
Typical start around Syabrubesi (~1,550m) with a high point at Laurebina La (~4,610m). Oxygen is reduced but risks are generally lower than EBC high passes with proper pacing.
Around 10–12 days depending on exit point. Plan for 4–7 hours most days; up to 7–9 hours on the pass day.
Forest trails, stone steps, suspension bridges, alpine meadows, and windy ridgelines near Laurebina with wide views of Langtang Lirung and Ganesh Himal. Occasional snow/ice in peak winter.
Long days, basic teahouse comforts, and variable weather require patience and a positive mindset.
With the right approach, this trek is accessible to a wide range of people, from seasoned hikers to determined beginners. Successful trekkers have ranged from teenagers to individuals in their 70s. The key is a willingness to challenge yourself and adequate preparation.
This route balances acclimatization with time to enjoy Langtang Valley and Kyanjin, the sacred Gosaikunda Lakes, and the cultural villages of Helambu while safely crossing Laurebina La. Here's why it works:
Gradual ascent through Lama Hotel and Langtang with optional acclimatization at Kyanjin minimizes AMS risk before the higher Laurebina La region.
Enjoy Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri viewpoints, yak pastures, the Gosaikunda Lakes, and Helambu monasteries and villages in one itinerary.
Time in Tamang communities of Langtang and Sherpa/Hyolmo villages of Helambu, with monasteries and local cheese factories.
Reasonable daily distances with one big pass day over Laurebina La, plus optional side hikes at Kyanjin.
4–7 hour days for most of the trek. Prior hiking fitness and sensible pacing make this itinerary achievable.
Builds confidence for higher-altitude routes in Everest/Annapurna or future trekking peaks.
Your days on the Langtang–Helambu trek follow a rhythm that connects you with the natural landscape and local cultures.
You'll wake up early to the sounds of the teahouse coming to life. After a hearty breakfast, you'll pack your daypack and set out on the trail, typically walking for 4 to 6 hours each day.
The scenery evolves as you ascend: lower valleys along the Langtang Khola with lush rhododendron and oak forests, higher yak pastures and alpine meadows near Kyanjin, and windy ridgelines approaching Laurebina with wide views of Langtang Lirung and Ganesh Himal.
Your trek will be punctuated by a lunch break of about an hour and shorter stops to rest, take photos, and soak in the incredible views.
You'll arrive at your destination for the day in the late afternoon. The evenings are for relaxing, enjoying a delicious dinner at a Sherpa-run teahouse, and stargazing in the clear mountain sky.
You can expect to stay in a comfortable three-star hotel with double occupancy rooms. Breakfast will be provided.
You'll stay in mountain lodges, commonly known as teahouses. The rooms are basic, typically with two beds, but the hospitality is warm and welcoming.
During the trek, your package will generally include breakfast, lunch, and dinner, which you'll have at the teahouses. The menu offers a variety of options, from traditional Nepali dishes like dal bhat (rice and lentils) to pasta, pizza, and Tibetan bread. The food choices become simpler the higher you go.
Hot showers may not always be available, especially at higher altitudes, and there is usually an extra charge for them. However, boiled drinking water will be accessible.
You can stay connected during your trek. In larger villages like Syabrubesi, Langtang Village, and Kyanjin Gompa, most teahouses offer paid WiFi. Mobile data from NTC or Ncell may work intermittently along the Langtang Valley and parts of Helambu; purchase a local SIM in Kathmandu.
Electricity is available in the villages, often supplemented by solar power. You can charge your electronic devices, though there is usually a small fee for this service.
Your tour package will typically include all necessary transportation:
You'll be trekking up to around 4,600–5,000 meters depending on side hikes (e.g., Kyanjin Ri/Tserko Ri), so it's crucial to be aware of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
The primary symptoms of AMS include headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, fatigue, and difficulty sleeping. These symptoms usually subside within 12 to 24 hours.
If they persist, the only cure is to descend to a lower altitude.
While AMS cannot be 100% prevented, the risk can be significantly reduced by:
Proper preparation is key to a successful and enjoyable Langtang–Helambu trek.
Since this is a moderately challenging, high-altitude trek, you need to be physically fit. If you lead a sedentary lifestyle, it's recommended to start training at least 3 to 6 months before your trip.
It's beneficial to have a basic understanding of first aid for minor injuries.
Research the weather, terrain, and landscape of the Langtang region to mentally prepare for the journey ahead.
If you have any pre-existing health conditions, consult your doctor before booking the trek.
Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for the Langtang–Helambu trek. Your policy must cover:
Before booking, carefully read through the entire trip itinerary, including what's included and excluded.
Select your preferred departure date from the available options.
Proceed with the payment to reserve your spot. Keep in mind that the initial deposit is typically non-refundable.
Once your booking is confirmed, you'll receive a detailed itinerary, a gear list, and other essential information to help you prepare.
According to Nepal's trekking regulations, independent trekking is not permitted in national park and conservation areas. You must book your Langtang–Helambu trek through a registered trekking agency and be accompanied by a licensed guide.
Your trekking agency will obtain the necessary permits on your behalf. These include:
Laurebinayak Pass (approx. 4,610m) is non-technical — there's no need for ropes or technical climbing gear in normal conditions. Expect a sustained, steep ascent with rocky trails and possible snow patches depending on season.
What to expect:
Standard trekking kit covers most days. For the pass day, your guide may recommend extra items depending on conditions — especially in shoulder seasons when snow or icy patches are likely.
Recommended for the pass day:
Prior high-altitude trekking experience is helpful but not mandatory. The itinerary is suitable for fit beginners — daily walks range from ~4–7 hours with one demanding pass day. Acclimatization days are included to reduce altitude risk.
We recommend:
Two main seasons offer the best trekking conditions:
Generally moderate — less extreme than the full Everest Base Camp routes but more challenging than many low-altitude treks due to one high pass and sustained daily climbs/descents.
Key differences:
A progressive training plan over 6–8 weeks will help. Focus on aerobic fitness, leg strength and back-to-back long hikes with a loaded pack to simulate trekking demands.
Suggested plan:
A detailed packing list is provided after booking. Essentials include layered clothing, a warm down jacket, sleeping bag (rated to at least -10°C ideally), sturdy hiking boots, and a daypack.
Kathmandu's Thamel district has many stores where you can rent or buy gear; rental is cost-effective for bulky items but purchase footwear and base layers for hygiene and fit.
Do not drink untreated tap or stream water. To minimise plastic waste and stay safe, use purification methods or buy boiled water from teahouses.
Best practices:
Facilities are basic but functional. Lower villages may have Western-style toilets; higher lodges generally provide squat or pit toilets and some charge a small fee.
Hot showers are available at selected teahouses (for a fee) but are not guaranteed every night — plan accordingly.
Yes — respecting local Tamang and Buddhist customs improves your experience and is appreciated by communities. Simple gestures go a long way.
