Your adventure begins with a sweeping 45-minute flight from Kathmandu, offering incredible views of the Everest and Makalu ranges. Upon landing in the warm Arun valley at Tumlingtar, you will meet your trekking staff and porters. The journey continues with an interesting and rugged drive on a rough dirt road, passing through the large town of Khandbari and the village of Chinchela before a long descent brings you to the village of Num for your overnight stay.
Your first day of walking starts with a steep descent to a bridge over the raging Arun River, taking you into a semi-tropical environment. From the river, a strenuous climb leads you up towards farm fields and the small village of Runmura. After a lunch break here, a gradual and final climb brings you to your overnight stop at the village of Seduwa, a small place with a primary school and health post, and your first views of the Jalajala rocky peaks.
After Seduwa village, the morning walk takes you on an undulating, winding trail to Tashi Gaon. This is a large Sherpa village and the last permanent settlement before you enter the wilderness of the upper Barun valley. The walk leads through beautiful farm areas with nice terraces of millet, a major crop in this region. This is a shorter day of trekking, allowing you time to explore this interesting and culturally distinct village.
Leaving the last village behind for a week, the morning walk leads on a gentle path into a thick forest of rhododendron, oak, and tall pine trees. After a few hours, you will stop for lunch on a grassy meadow. The afternoon involves a steep climb for a few hours to reach the high ridge of Khongma Danda. As you ascend, the tall trees give way to smaller rhododendron and juniper bushes. This high ridge offers excellent first views of the Kanchenjunga and Makalu mountain ranges.
From Khongma Danda, the morning walk follows a high ridge line on a gradual path, with a few ups and downs, reaching the icy ponds of Thulo Pokhari and Sano Pokhari. You will then cross the Tutu La and Shipton La passes, both above 4,000 meters. A final downhill trek takes you back into a beautiful forest, with views of the Khumbakarna Himal range, to your overnight camp at Mumbuk, set on a level ground in the middle of tall trees.
Today's walk leads you into the scenic Barun valley, which is famous for its rare species of vegetation and wildlife. The morning begins with a downhill trek for an hour, crossing a small stream to reach the valley floor. The walk is then a gentle ascent, with incredible views of peaks on both sides of the valley. After a pleasant walk of about 5 hours, you will reach the high pasture of Nehe Kharka for your overnight camp.
From the Barun valley, the trek continues to Shersong, located towards the end of the valley and close to Makalu Base Camp. You will walk on a gentle uphill trail, crossing streams, with great views of Mt. Makalu and the Baruntse peaks opening up before you. After a nice walk of about 5 hours through this incredible high-altitude landscape, you will reach your destination at Shersong for your overnight stop.
Today's morning adventure is a shorter but high-altitude trek. The trail takes you over moraine and ice into a rocky area to reach Makalu Base Camp, situated close to a glacial icy pond. Here, you will be surrounded by the towering presence of the great South Face of Mt. Makalu, with plenty of time to marvel at this wild and beautiful surrounding with its arrays of high peaks.
Today is a rest and acclimatization day to enjoy the incredible views of Mt. Makalu and the Baruntse peaks. In the morning, there is an optional hike to a higher ridge for excellent and rare views of Mt. Everest's East Face, known as the Kangshung face, as well as the towering Mt. Lhotse. This will further aid your acclimatization.
Today, you will retrace your journey back down the beautiful Barun valley to Yangle Kharka. This area is enclosed within high rocky cliffs, with views of cascading waterfalls. After a long but rewarding descent, you will reach your overnight camp at this temporary summer grazing place for cow herders.
After a wonderful time in the upper Barun valley, the walk leads past the valley with a final climb to reach back into the thick woodland at Mumbuk for your overnight camp. You will enjoy the scenery from a different perspective as you make your way down, with the high peaks now behind you.
Today, you will trek on the same trail back to Khongma ridge. The morning walk involves a climb for an hour or more through the forest. Upon reaching the hilltop ridge and leaving the tree lines behind, you will pass the ponds and cross over the Tutu La and Shipton La passes once more before reaching the Khongma hilltop for your overnight camp.
The morning walk today is a long downhill path that takes you back into the forest of tall trees to reach the villages and farm fields below. Upon reaching Tashi Gaon, you will take a different, higher route to the village of Narbu Gaon. This trail leads through cool, shaded woodlands and beautiful farm terraces, eventually reaching a large Sherpa village for your overnight stop.
From Narbu Gaon, your last day of walking on this wonderful adventure leads downhill with a few short ascents to Seduwa village. After a rest here, you will continue your descent on a steep path down to the Arun River. After crossing a bridge, a final steep climb of a few hours will bring you back to the village of Num for your last overnight stay in the high hills of Makalu.
After a wonderful time in the high hills and mountains, you will take an exciting and adventurous drive on the rough road from Num back to Tumlingtar. You will pass through villages with beautiful views of the surrounding green hills and peaks. After a few hours, you will reach Khadbari, a major town, before the final hour-long downhill drive back to the comfort of a nice lodge in Tumlingtar.
Depending on the flight time to Kathmandu, you will be transferred to the Tumlingtar air terminal for your scenic flight back to the capital. After this great experience, upon reaching Kathmandu, you will be transferred to your hotel, with the afternoon free for individual activities and shopping before a final celebratory farewell dinner.

Your days on the Makalu with Arun & Barun Valley Trek will follow a rhythm that connects you with Nepal's most remote wilderness, spectacular mountain vistas, and authentic cultural encounters, from lush subtropical forests to high-altitude glaciers, and from traditional villages to challenging high passes.
You'll wake up early (often before sunrise) to maximize daylight hours for trekking. After a hearty breakfast at the teahouse, you'll pack your daypack with essentials (water, snacks, extra layers, camera) and begin your day's trek, typically walking for 5 to 9 hours. On acclimatization days, you'll do shorter hikes to higher elevations before returning to sleep lower.
The scenery changes dramatically as you trek through incredibly diverse landscapes. You'll walk through lush subtropical forests with rhododendron and bamboo, terraced farmland, rocky moraine trails through the pristine Barun Valley, steep stone steps, narrow gorges, and high-altitude alpine meadows. The route leads to Makalu Base Camp, the ultimate destination, and passes through traditional villages like Tashigaon and Seduwa, offering stunning mountain vistas and authentic cultural encounters with Rai, Limbu, and Sherpa communities.
Your trekking day will be punctuated by a lunch break of about an hour at a teahouse along the route, and shorter stops to rest, take photos, hydrate, and soak in the incredible mountain landscapes. Your guide will pace the day appropriately, ensuring you have time to appreciate the views and maintain a sustainable pace, especially at higher altitudes.
You'll arrive at your teahouse destination for the day in the late afternoon. The evenings are for relaxing, enjoying a delicious dinner at the teahouse (typically dal bhat, noodles, or momos), and resting your tired legs. You may spend time interacting with other trekkers, local families, or simply stargazing in the clear mountain sky. During acclimatization days, evenings may include cultural interactions and storytelling with local Kirati, Sherpa, or Tibetan families.
You can expect to stay in a comfortable three-star hotel with double occupancy rooms. Breakfast will be provided.
You'll stay in basic but comfortable teahouses along the trekking route. At lower elevations (Seduwa, Tashigaon), teahouses are more developed with shared bathrooms. At high altitudes (Makalu Base Camp, Langmale Kharka), accommodation is more basic, and tented camps may be used. Rooms typically have two beds, and you'll need your own sleeping bag. The hospitality is warm and welcoming despite the remote location. In Kathmandu, you'll stay in comfortable hotels.
During the trek, your package includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner throughout the entire journey. Meals are prepared fresh at each teahouse, featuring local Nepali cuisine like dal bhat (rice and lentils), noodles, momos, and simple international dishes. At high altitudes, menu options become more limited, but hearty, energy-rich meals are always available. The food is simple but nourishing, designed to fuel your challenging days of trekking.
Hot showers are available at hotel accommodations in Kathmandu and Tumlingtar. On the trek, hot showers may be available at lower elevation teahouses (often for an additional fee), but at high altitudes, hot water is very limited or unavailable. Many trekkers use wet wipes for personal hygiene at high altitude. This is part of the authentic wilderness experience of remote trekking.
Internet connectivity is very limited or non-existent during the trek due to the remote location. In Kathmandu and Tumlingtar, WiFi is available at hotels. On the trek, some lower elevation teahouses may have very basic WiFi (often unreliable and slow), but at high altitudes, there is no internet connectivity. You can purchase a local SIM card (Ncell or NTC) for use in cities, but mobile coverage is very limited or non-existent in the remote Makalu region. This is part of the authentic wilderness experience.
Electricity is available in the villages, often supplemented by solar power. You can charge your electronic devices, though there is usually a small fee for this service. In remote areas, charging may be limited due to power availability and should be used conservatively.
Your trek package includes all necessary transportation:
As you'll be trekking to elevations up to 4,870 meters at Makalu Base Camp (with optional viewpoint at 5,300m), the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is significant. Proper acclimatization is crucial for this high-altitude trek, and it's essential to be aware of altitude-related issues and adapt to varying climates from subtropical forests to high-altitude glaciers.
Altitude symptoms may include headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, shortness of breath, and difficulty sleeping. At these high altitudes, symptoms can be more pronounced and require immediate attention if they worsen.
If any symptoms persist or worsen, inform your guide immediately for appropriate guidance.
At high altitudes, the risk is significant, but you can ensure a safe and successful trek by:

The Makalu with Arun & Barun Valley Trek stands out as one of Nepal's most unique and least-trekked adventures, offering an authentic wilderness experience that few trekkers ever encounter. What makes this 18-day journey truly special is its incredible scenic diversity - you'll trek from the warm, subtropical paddy fields and lush forests of the Arun Valley at lower elevations, all the way up to the arctic zone of ice and glaciers at Makalu Base Camp at 4,812 meters. This dramatic transition through multiple climate zones in a single trek is rarely found elsewhere in the Himalayas.
Unlike the crowded trails of Everest or Annapurna, the Makalu region remains one of Nepal's last true wildernesses. The trek takes you through the least-trekked areas of the Makalu and Barun valleys, a region renowned for its pristine nature and enriched with some of the world's rarest vegetation. You'll experience genuine solitude and untouched natural beauty, encountering very few other trekkers along the way. The journey also offers spectacular panoramas of Himalayan giants, with incredible up-close views of the magnificent Mount Makalu (8,463m) and glimpses of the distant Everest range.
The cultural immersion is equally remarkable, as you explore remote and traditional rural farm villages of the Rai, Kirat, Sherpa, and other fascinating hill tribes of eastern Nepal, experiencing their unique customs and warm hospitality. Combined with enchanting old-growth forests of blooming rhododendron, magnolia, oak, and pine trees, this trek offers a challenging and rewarding off-the-beaten-path adventure that provides a genuine sense of exploration and profound connection with a wild and untouched part of the Himalayas.
The Makalu with Arun & Barun Valley Trek is an 18-day journey that begins with arrival in Kathmandu, followed by a scenic 45-minute flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar in the warm Arun River valley, then a 4-hour adventurous jeep drive to Num (1,560m), your trailhead. The trek then takes you through a remarkable journey of scenic diversity, starting from the low, warm paddy fields and subtropical forests of the Arun Valley.
From Num, you'll trek to Seduwa (1,540m), then ascend to Tashi Gaon (2,135m), the last permanent settlement before entering the wilderness. The route continues to Khongma Danda (3,556m) before crossing the spectacular Tutu La and Shipton La passes (both above 4,000m) to reach Mumbuk. You'll then descend into the pristine Barun Valley, trekking through Nehe Kharka (3,760m) to Shersong (4,572m), and finally to Makalu Base Camp (4,812m) for spectacular views of Mount Makalu and the surrounding peaks.
The return journey retraces through Yangle Kharka, Mumbuk, and back over the passes to Khongma Danda, then descends through Narbu Gaon and Seduwa to Num. The trek concludes with a drive back to Tumlingtar and a scenic flight to Kathmandu. This route offers an incredible transition from subtropical lowlands to high alpine meadows and finally to the arctic zone of ice and glaciers, showcasing Nepal's most diverse trekking landscape.
The Makalu with Arun & Barun Valley Trek is rated as moderately difficult to challenging, requiring good physical fitness, prior trekking experience, and proper preparation. This is a demanding 18-day expedition that takes you to 4,812 meters at Makalu Base Camp, with daily walks of 5-7 hours through varied and sometimes challenging terrain that transitions dramatically from subtropical lowlands to high-altitude glaciers.
Difficulty factors:
The Arun Valley and Barun Valley are the heart and soul of this trek, offering two distinct but equally spectacular wilderness experiences. The Arun Valley, where your journey begins, is characterized by warm, subtropical paddy fields, lush forests, and traditional farming villages. This lower valley provides a gentle introduction to the trek, with its semi-tropical environment, mist-filled woodlands enriched with rare herbs, and unique species of vegetation found nowhere else on Earth.
As you cross the high passes (Tutu La and Shipton La), you enter the pristine Barun Valley, which is famous for its rare vegetation and wildlife. The Barun Valley is a protected area renowned for its incredible biodiversity, offering a completely different landscape with high-altitude pastures, cascading waterfalls, and spectacular mountain views. This valley is enclosed within high rocky cliffs and provides the route to Makalu Base Camp, with great views of Mount Makalu and the Baruntse peaks opening up as you progress.
The contrast between these two valleys is what makes this trek so unique - you experience the dramatic transition from the warm, agricultural landscapes of the Arun Valley to the wild, high-altitude wilderness of the Barun Valley, all within a single journey. The Barun Valley's remote location and protected status mean it remains one of Nepal's last true wildernesses, offering trekkers an authentic sense of exploration and profound connection with untouched nature.
The Makalu with Arun & Barun Valley Trek is best done during spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) when weather conditions are most favorable for high-altitude trekking. These seasons offer clear skies, stable weather, and the best mountain views, which are essential for this challenging trek that reaches elevations above 4,800 meters and crosses high passes.
The Makalu with Arun & Barun Valley Trek uses a combination of teahouse accommodations and tented camps, depending on the location and elevation. At lower elevations in the Arun Valley (Num, Seduwa, Tashi Gaon, Narbu Gaon) and at Khongma Danda, you'll stay in basic teahouses. However, in the remote Barun Valley and at high-altitude locations, tented camps are used due to the extreme remoteness and lack of permanent structures.
Accommodation details:
The Makalu with Arun & Barun Valley Trek is an 18-day expedition, including travel days to and from Kathmandu. The actual trekking portion covers approximately 16 days of walking, with the remaining days allocated for travel and a rest day at base camp for local exploration and acclimatization.
Trek duration breakdown:
The Makalu with Arun & Barun Valley Trek requires special permits because the region is designated as a restricted area by the Nepalese government. This helps preserve the pristine wilderness of the Makalu and Barun valleys and limits the number of trekkers, ensuring an authentic wilderness experience. Your tour operator will handle all permit applications, but you need to provide the necessary documentation.
Required permits and documentation:
The Makalu with Arun & Barun Valley Trek takes you through Makalu Barun National Park, a sanctuary for incredible biodiversity. The Arun Valley's mist-filled woodlands are enriched with rare herbs and unique species of vegetation found nowhere else on Earth, while the Barun Valley is famous for its rare vegetation and wildlife, making wildlife and flora encounters one of the trek's highlights.
Wildlife you may encounter:
