    Introduction

Are you ready to take on one of the most challenging and adventurous journeys in Nepal? The Makalu Circuit Trek is a testament to the true spirit of Himalayan trekking, a demanding expedition that takes you through the heart of a remote and wild landscape to the base of the world's fifth-highest mountain, Mt. Makalu (8,485m). This trek is not for the faint of heart; the entire circuit involves conquering a series of difficult high passes, including the formidable Sherpani Col (6,180m), West Col (6,143m), and the Amphu Lapcha Pass (5,850m). Due to the extreme altitudes and technical challenges, previous high-altitude trekking experience and excellent physical condition are highly recommended for any adventurer looking to accomplish this incredible feat.

This trek is the perfect combination of a less-explored, off-the-beaten-path journey and a classic Himalayan trail. You will spend the majority of your time in the remote and rarely visited wilderness of the Makalu-Barun National Park, a sanctuary of pristine nature and incredible biodiversity. After conquering the high passes, your journey transitions as you descend into the world's most popular classic trekking region, joining the Everest Base Camp trail.

This 24-day-long adventure begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to the airstrip at Tumlingtar, followed by a drive to the trailhead. The initial part of the trek is a scenic and relatively soft walk, but it gradually becomes tougher as you ascend into the high-altitude wilderness. After more than a week of trekking, you will reach Makalu Base Camp (4,870m), where a crucial acclimatization day will prepare you for the serious challenge of the high passes.

The trail then becomes progressively wilder and more technical as you make your way over the Sherpani Col, West Col, and Amphu Lapcha Pass. After accomplishing this incredible feat, your journey starts to descend, following a safer and more comfortable walk that joins the popular Everest trail at the village of Chhukhung. From there, you will trek through the famous landmarks of the Khumbu, including Tengboche and the bustling Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar, before finally reaching Lukla for your flight back to Kathmandu.

The Makalu Circuit Trek promises a harmonious blend of high-altitude adventure, deep cultural immersion with the Sherpa and Rai communities, and a profound exploration of the natural world. This is not just a trek; it is a journey of a lifetime, a chance to craft memories that will be worth sharing for generations to come.

Is the Makalu Circuit Trek Very Hard?

The Makalu Circuit Trek is rated as extremely challenging, making it one of Nepal's most demanding treks. This is a long, remote, and physically demanding expedition that requires excellent fitness, prior high-altitude trekking experience, and technical mountaineering skills. The trek reaches elevations of 6,180 meters at Sherpani Col and involves crossing four technical high passes over 5,500 meters, with daily walks of 5-9 hours over 24 days.

              Key aspects you'll experience include:

              Altitude

The trek starts at around 1,040m in Num and reaches a maximum altitude of 6,180m at Sherpani Col. Makalu Base Camp is at 4,870m, with high passes reaching up to 6,180m (Sherpani Col). This extreme altitude variation requires proper acclimatization, extensive experience with high-altitude trekking, and understanding of altitude-related challenges. Multiple acclimatization days are included throughout the circuit.

              Duration and Distance

Approximately 200-220 kilometers over 24 days (20-21 days of actual trekking). Plan for 5-7 hours of walking most days, with high pass crossing days taking 8-9 hours. The trek includes multiple acclimatization days and rest days in Kathmandu.

              Terrain

Diverse terrain including lush subtropical forests in the Arun Valley, terraced farmland, rocky moraine trails through the Barun Valley, steep stone steps, narrow gorges, high-altitude alpine meadows, and challenging high passes. The terrain becomes increasingly difficult as you gain elevation, requiring careful footing and physical strength.

              Cultural Immersion

Experience diverse ethnic communities including Rai, Limbu, and Sherpa people in villages like Seduwa, Tashigaon, and other settlements along the route. Visit remote mountain monasteries and interact with local people, requiring respect for local customs and openness to learning about the unique cultural heritage of Nepal's far-eastern region.

              Who Can Do It?

This trek is designed for seasoned trekkers with prior high-altitude experience. Successful trekkers typically have completed challenging multi-day treks before and understand the demands of high-altitude trekking. While age is less important than fitness and experience, this trek requires excellent physical condition and mental determination. The key is proper preparation, realistic expectations, and adequate training before the trek.

Why Choose the Makalu Circuit Trek?

The Makalu Circuit Trek is one of Nepal's most remote and challenging expeditions, offering the ultimate opportunity to experience true wilderness, spectacular high-altitude trekking, technical mountaineering, and authentic cultural encounters in one epic 24-day trans-Himalayan journey. A Typical Day on the Makalu Circuit Trek

Your days on the Makalu Circuit Trek will follow a rhythm that connects you with Nepal's most remote wilderness, spectacular mountain vistas, and authentic cultural encounters, from lush subtropical forests to high-altitude glaciers, and from traditional villages to challenging high passes.

              Early Mornings

You'll wake up early (often before sunrise) to maximize daylight hours for trekking. After a hearty breakfast at the teahouse, you'll pack your daypack with essentials (water, snacks, extra layers, camera) and begin your day's trek, typically walking for 5 to 9 hours. On acclimatization days, you'll do shorter hikes to higher elevations before returning to sleep lower.

              The Trekking Route

The scenery changes dramatically as you trek through incredibly diverse landscapes. You'll walk through lush subtropical forests with rhododendron and bamboo, terraced farmland, rocky moraine trails through the pristine Barun Valley, steep stone steps, narrow gorges, and high-altitude alpine meadows. The route leads to Makalu Circuit, the ultimate destination, and passes through traditional villages like Tashigaon and Seduwa, offering stunning mountain vistas and authentic cultural encounters with Rai, Limbu, and Sherpa communities.

              Lunch and Breaks

Your trekking day will be punctuated by a lunch break of about an hour at a teahouse along the route, and shorter stops to rest, take photos, hydrate, and soak in the incredible mountain landscapes. Your guide will pace the day appropriately, ensuring you have time to appreciate the views and maintain a sustainable pace, especially at higher altitudes.

              Evenings

You'll arrive at your teahouse destination for the day in the late afternoon. The evenings are for relaxing, enjoying a delicious dinner at the teahouse (typically dal bhat, noodles, or momos), and resting your tired legs. You may spend time interacting with other trekkers, local families, or simply stargazing in the clear mountain sky. During acclimatization days, evenings may include cultural interactions and storytelling with local Kirati, Sherpa, or Tibetan families.

              Food and Accommodation

              In Kathmandu

You can expect to stay in a comfortable three-star hotel with double occupancy rooms. Breakfast will be provided.

              On the Trek

You'll stay in basic but comfortable teahouses along the trekking route. At lower elevations (Seduwa, Tashigaon), teahouses are more developed with shared bathrooms. At high altitudes (Makalu Circuit, Langmale Kharka), accommodation is more basic, and tented camps may be used. Rooms typically have two beds, and you'll need your own sleeping bag. The hospitality is warm and welcoming despite the remote location. In Kathmandu, you'll stay in comfortable hotels.

              Meals

During the trek, your package includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner throughout the entire journey. Meals are prepared fresh at each teahouse, featuring local Nepali cuisine like dal bhat (rice and lentils), noodles, momos, and simple international dishes. At high altitudes, menu options become more limited, but hearty, energy-rich meals are always available. The food is simple but nourishing, designed to fuel your challenging days of trekking.

              Showers

Hot showers are available at hotel accommodations in Kathmandu and Tumlingtar. On the trek, hot showers may be available at lower elevation teahouses (often for an additional fee), but at high altitudes, hot water is very limited or unavailable. Many trekkers use wet wipes for personal hygiene at high altitude. This is part of the authentic wilderness experience of remote trekking.

              Staying Connected and Charged

              Internet/WiFi

Internet connectivity is very limited or non-existent during the trek due to the remote location. In Kathmandu and Tumlingtar, WiFi is available at hotels. On the trek, some lower elevation teahouses may have very basic WiFi (often unreliable and slow), but at high altitudes, there is no internet connectivity. You can purchase a local SIM card (Ncell or NTC) for use in cities, but mobile coverage is very limited or non-existent in the remote Makalu region. This is part of the authentic wilderness experience.

              Charging

Electricity is available in the villages, often supplemented by solar power. You can charge your electronic devices, though there is usually a small fee for this service. In remote areas, charging may be limited due to power availability and should be used conservatively.

              Transportation

Your trek package includes all necessary transportation:

              • Airport transfers in Kathmandu in a private vehicle.
              • Round-trip domestic flights between Kathmandu and Tumlingtar (Days 3 and 18).
              • Ground transportation: Drive from Tumlingtar to Num (Day 3), and from Num to Tumlingtar (Day 17).
              • Porter service to carry your main luggage during the trek (one porter typically for every two trekkers).

              Altitude Sickness and Acclimatization

As you'll be trekking to elevations up to 6,180 meters at Sherpani Col, with multiple days spent above 5,500 meters, the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is extremely significant. Proper acclimatization is crucial for this extreme high-altitude expedition, and it's essential to be aware of altitude-related issues and adapt to varying climates from subtropical forests to extreme high-altitude glaciers and technical pass crossings.

              Symptoms

Altitude symptoms may include headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, shortness of breath, and difficulty sleeping. At these high altitudes, symptoms can be more pronounced and require immediate attention if they worsen.

If any symptoms persist or worsen, inform your guide immediately for appropriate guidance.

              Prevention

At high altitudes, the risk is significant, but you can ensure a safe and successful trek by:

              • Proper Acclimatization: The itinerary includes gradual altitude gain and rest days
              • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, at least 3 liters per day
              • Listen to Your Body: Rest when needed and communicate with your guide

              Getting Ready and Staying Safe

Proper preparation is key to a successful and enjoyable Makalu Circuit Trek, combining physical readiness with cultural sensitivity for Nepal's diverse regions and varied experiences.

              Physical Fitness

Since this is an extremely challenging high-altitude expedition, you need excellent fitness for 5-9 hours of daily walking across varied and technical terrain. The trek involves crossing four high passes over 5,500 meters, reaching elevations up to 6,180 meters, requiring proper physical preparation, extensive prior high-altitude trekking experience, technical mountaineering skills, and strong mental determination. This is only suitable for very experienced trekkers and mountaineers.

              Recommended Training:
Cardiovascular exercise: Engage in activities like hiking, cycling, swimming, or running to build your endurance for daily trekking at high altitude.
Cultural preparation: Learn about diverse Nepali cultures including Newari culture in Kathmandu, and Rai, Limbu, and Sherpa traditions in the villages along the route to enhance your trekking experience.
High-altitude preparation: If possible, gain experience with high-altitude trekking (above 4,000m) before attempting this trek. Practice hiking with a loaded daypack and familiarize yourself with altitude sickness symptoms and prevention.
              Cultural Sensitivity

Learn about diverse Nepali customs including Newari culture in Kathmandu, Kirati (Limbu and Rai) traditions in the lower valleys, Tibetan Bhotiya customs in high-altitude areas, and respectful cultural interactions with local communities throughout the trek.

              Mountain Preparation

Research the Makalu region, high-altitude trekking techniques, altitude sickness prevention, and prepare for an unforgettable trekking adventure to the base camp of the world's fifth-highest mountain through pristine wilderness.

              Consult Your Doctor

If you have any pre-existing health conditions, especially those affecting mobility, endurance, or altitude tolerance, consult your doctor before booking the trek.

              Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for the Makalu Circuit Trek. Your policy must cover:

              • Medical expenses and emergency evacuation coverage for high-altitude trekking in remote terrain (maximum altitude 4,870m at Makalu Circuit, with optional viewpoint at 5,300m).
              • Emergency helicopter rescue coverage for high-altitude emergencies.
              • Trip cancellation and interruption due to weather or health issues.
              • Loss or theft of baggage, equipment, and trekking gear.
              • Adventure sports coverage for high-altitude trekking, mountaineering activities, and wilderness expeditions.
              • Repatriation coverage in case of serious injury or illness.

              Frequently Asked Questions

The Makalu Circuit Trek is one of the most challenging and adventurous treks in Nepal - a 24-day trans-Himalayan expedition that takes you from the remote Makalu region into the legendary Khumbu (Everest) region. Unlike standard base camp treks, this circuit involves crossing four formidable high passes over 5,500 meters, including the Sherpani Col (6,180m), West Col (6,143m), Amphu Labsta Pass (5,845m), and Kongma La (5,535m). This is a true expedition-style trek that combines technical mountaineering elements with traditional trekking.

What makes the Makalu Circuit Trek unique is its dual nature - you begin in the pristine, rarely-visited wilderness of Makalu-Barun National Park, trek to Makalu Circuit, then cross challenging high passes to enter the famous Everest region, ultimately visiting Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar. This creates a complete circuit that showcases the best of both regions. The trek requires previous high-altitude experience, excellent physical fitness, and comfort with technical terrain including ice climbing and rappelling on fixed ropes.

This is not a trek for beginners - it's designed for experienced trekkers and mountaineers seeking the ultimate Himalayan challenge. The combination of extreme altitude, technical pass crossings, remote wilderness, and the transition between two distinct regions makes this one of Nepal's most demanding and rewarding trekking experiences.

The Makalu Circuit Trek involves crossing four challenging high passes, each presenting unique technical and physical challenges. These passes are the crux of the expedition and require proper preparation, acclimatization, and experienced guides.

              The Four High Passes:

              • Sherpani Col (6,180m / 20,276ft): The highest and most challenging pass of the circuit. This pass requires technical ice climbing with fixed ropes on steep icy slopes. The ascent is demanding, but the views from the top are absolutely spectacular, offering panoramic vistas of the remote Honku Basin. This is typically crossed on Day 14, often in pre-dawn darkness to ensure safe conditions.
              • West Col (6,143m / 20,154ft): Crossed immediately after Sherpani Col on the same challenging day. After descending from Sherpani Col, you face another demanding climb to West Col. The technical descent into the Honku Basin is long and requires careful navigation. This double-pass crossing is one of the most physically demanding days of the entire trek.
              • Amphu Labsta Pass (5,845m / 19,177ft): A highly technical pass that marks your entry into the Everest region. The ascent involves near-vertical ice walls requiring fixed ropes and ice climbing skills. The descent is even more technical, requiring rappelling down steep icy slopes. This pass is the gateway from the remote Makalu region into the famous Khumbu, making it a significant milestone of the circuit.
              • Kongma La Pass (5,535m / 18,159ft): The final high pass of the circuit, crossed after entering the Everest region. This pass offers spectacular views of the Khumbu region and requires a strenuous ascent followed by a challenging descent over the Khumbu Glacier moraine to reach Lobuche. While slightly lower than the other passes, it still presents significant challenges at high altitude.

All four passes require proper acclimatization, technical equipment (crampons, ice axes, harnesses), and experienced guides who will fix ropes and ensure safety. These passes are what make the Makalu Circuit Trek a true expedition-style adventure rather than a standard trek.

The Makalu Circuit Trek is rated as extremely challenging and is one of the most demanding treks in Nepal. This is not a trek for beginners - it requires previous high-altitude trekking experience, excellent physical fitness, and comfort with technical mountaineering elements. The 24-day expedition involves crossing four passes over 5,500 meters, with the highest reaching 6,180 meters.

              Difficulty factors:

              • Extreme altitude: The trek reaches 6,180 meters at Sherpani Col, with multiple days spent above 5,500 meters. The circuit includes crossing four high passes, each requiring proper acclimatization. Altitude sickness is a serious risk, and prior experience with altitudes above 5,000 meters is essential. The trek includes acclimatization days, but the extreme elevations make this one of Nepal's most challenging treks.
              • Technical mountaineering: The high pass crossings require technical skills including ice climbing, rappelling, and using fixed ropes on near-vertical ice walls. You'll need to be comfortable with crampons, ice axes, and harnesses. The Amphu Labsta Pass in particular involves technical ice climbing and rappelling that requires mountaineering experience.
              • Long and demanding days: The 24-day duration includes several 8-9 hour days, particularly during pass crossings. Day 14 involves crossing both Sherpani Col and West Col in a single day, which is extremely physically demanding. The sustained effort over nearly a month requires exceptional fitness and mental resilience.
              • Remote and challenging terrain: The circuit takes you through extremely remote wilderness with limited facilities. The terrain includes glaciers, icefalls, rocky moraines, and technical alpine sections. Weather conditions can change rapidly, and rescue options are limited in the remote sections.
              • Required experience: This trek is only suitable for experienced trekkers who have completed challenging high-altitude treks before (preferably above 5,000m). Prior experience with technical mountaineering, ice climbing, or glacier travel is highly recommended. You should be in excellent physical condition, able to walk 8-9 hours daily at high altitude, and mentally prepared for the challenges ahead.

The trans-Himalayan crossing from the Makalu region into the Everest region is what makes the Makalu Circuit Trek truly unique. This transition takes you from one of Nepal's most remote wilderness areas into the world's most famous trekking region, creating a complete circuit that showcases the best of both worlds.

              Unique aspects of the crossing:

              • Two Distinct Regions: The circuit begins in the pristine, rarely-visited Makalu-Barun National Park, where you'll experience true wilderness solitude with very few other trekkers. After crossing the high passes, you transition into the legendary Khumbu (Everest) region, joining the popular Everest Base Camp trail at Chhukhung. This creates a unique journey through two completely different trekking experiences in one expedition.
              • The Amphu Labsta Gateway: The Amphu Labsta Pass (5,845m) serves as the dramatic gateway between the two regions. Crossing this technical pass with its near-vertical ice walls marks your official entry into the Everest region. The contrast between the remote Honku Basin on one side and the Imja Glacier leading to the Khumbu on the other is striking.
              • Two National Parks: The circuit takes you through both Makalu-Barun National Park and Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park, each with its own unique character, biodiversity, and landscapes. This dual-park experience is rare and offers incredible variety throughout the journey.
              • Cultural Transition: The crossing also represents a cultural transition - from the Rai and Limbu communities in the lower Makalu region to the famous Sherpa communities of the Khumbu. This provides a rich cultural experience showcasing the diversity of Himalayan ethnic groups.
              • Complete Circuit Experience: Unlike linear treks that retrace their steps, the circuit creates a complete loop that never repeats terrain. You experience the remote wilderness of Makalu, cross challenging high passes, and then enjoy the iconic landmarks of the Everest region - all in one continuous journey.

The Makalu Circuit Trek requires technical mountaineering equipment and skills due to the challenging high pass crossings. Your trekking agency will provide most equipment, but understanding what's needed helps you prepare properly for this expedition-style adventure.

              Required technical equipment:

              • Mountaineering gear: Crampons (for ice traction), ice axes (for balance and self-arrest), climbing harnesses, and helmets are essential for the technical pass crossings. Your agency will provide these, but you should be familiar with their use. Fixed ropes will be set up by guides on the most technical sections.
              • High-altitude clothing: Technical mountaineering clothing including down jackets, shell layers, thermal base layers, and proper high-altitude boots are essential. Temperatures can drop well below freezing, especially during early morning pass crossings. Quality gear is crucial for safety and comfort.
              • Safety equipment: Headlamps (for pre-dawn starts), GPS devices, and emergency communication equipment. Your guides will carry these, but having your own headlamp is essential. The pass crossings often begin before dawn to ensure safe conditions.
              • Required skills: Basic ice climbing and rappelling skills are highly recommended. While guides will provide instruction and support, being comfortable with these techniques makes the experience safer and more enjoyable. Prior experience with glacier travel and high-altitude mountaineering is ideal.
              • Physical preparation: Excellent cardiovascular fitness, strength training (especially for legs and core), and prior high-altitude experience are essential. The technical sections require sustained physical effort at extreme altitudes, making fitness preparation crucial for success and safety.

Your experienced guides will provide training on equipment use and safety procedures before the pass crossings. However, having prior mountaineering experience significantly enhances your safety and enjoyment of this challenging expedition.

The Makalu Circuit Trek is best attempted during spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) when weather conditions are most favorable for the extreme high-altitude pass crossings. These seasons offer stable weather, clear skies, and safer conditions for the technical mountaineering sections, which are critical for this challenging circuit.

              Best seasons:

              • Autumn (September-November): The optimal season for the Makalu Circuit Trek. Post-monsoon conditions provide stable weather, clear mountain views, and ideal conditions for the high pass crossings. The technical sections are safer with firm snow and ice conditions. This is when most expeditions attempt the circuit, offering the best chances of successfully crossing all four passes.
              • Spring (March-May): Second-best season with generally stable weather and clear skies. The rhododendron forests are in full bloom, creating spectacular scenery. However, spring conditions can be more variable, and the high passes may have softer snow conditions. Early spring (March-April) is generally preferred over late spring (May) when temperatures begin to rise.
              • Winter (December-February): Extremely dangerous and not recommended. Temperatures drop well below freezing, making the high pass crossings life-threatening. Ice conditions become extremely hazardous, and the risk of frostbite and hypothermia is severe. The circuit should not be attempted during winter.
              • Summer/Monsoon (June-August): Not recommended due to heavy rainfall, landslides, poor visibility, and dangerous conditions on the high passes. The technical sections become extremely hazardous with unstable snow and ice. The circuit should not be attempted during monsoon season.

Weather conditions at extreme altitudes can change rapidly regardless of season. Your experienced guides will monitor conditions closely and make decisions about pass crossings based on safety. Flexibility in your schedule is important, as weather delays are possible even during the best seasons.

The Makalu Circuit Trek is a 24-day expedition from arrival in Kathmandu to final departure. This includes travel days, acclimatization, and the complete circuit through both the Makalu and Everest regions. The actual trekking portion covers approximately 20-21 days of walking, with several rest and acclimatization days built into the schedule.

              Trek duration breakdown:

              • Total duration: 24 days from arrival in Kathmandu to final departure. This includes 2 days in Kathmandu (arrival and permit preparation), 1 day for travel to the trailhead, 20-21 days of actual trekking including rest days, and 1 day for return travel to Kathmandu.
              • Trekking days: Approximately 20-21 days of actual trekking, with daily walking durations ranging from 5-9 hours. Most days involve 5-7 hours of trekking, but the high pass crossing days (Days 14, 17, 18) can take 8-9 hours. The circuit includes multiple acclimatization and rest days to ensure safety at extreme altitudes.
              • High pass crossing days: Days 14 (Sherpani Col & West Col), 17 (Amphu Labsta), and 18 (Kongma La) are the most demanding, often starting before dawn and taking 8-9 hours. These days require early starts (often 3-4 AM) to ensure safe conditions on the technical sections.
              • Acclimatization days: The circuit includes crucial acclimatization days at Makalu Base Camp (Day 11) and Amphu Labsta Base Camp (Day 16). These rest days are essential for adapting to extreme altitudes before attempting the high pass crossings.
              • Distance and elevation: The circuit covers approximately 200-220 kilometers, taking you from Num (1,040m) through Makalu Base Camp (4,870m), across four high passes (up to 6,180m), to Everest Base Camp (5,364m), and finally to Lukla (2,840m). The route includes extreme elevation gains and losses, making it one of Nepal's most physically demanding treks.

The Makalu Circuit Trek requires special permits because it passes through restricted areas and two national parks. Since the circuit crosses from the Makalu region into the Everest region, you'll need permits for both areas. Your tour operator will handle all permit applications, but you need to provide the necessary documentation well in advance.

              Required permits and documentation:

              • Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for Makalu: Required for the Makalu region portion of the circuit. This permit must be obtained through a registered trekking agency in Nepal - you cannot obtain it independently. The permit requires your original passport, passport-sized photos, and proof of travel insurance. The cost varies by season and nationality.
              • Makalu Barun National Park Entry Permit: Required for entry into Makalu Barun National Park during the first part of the circuit. This permit helps fund conservation efforts and is obtained through your trekking agency or at the park entry point.
              • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit: Required when you enter the Everest region portion of the circuit (after crossing Amphu Labsta Pass). This permit is for Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park and is obtained at the park entry point or through your agency.
              • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit: Required for trekking in the Khumbu region (Everest region). This local municipality permit is obtained at the entry point or through your trekking agency. It supports local development and infrastructure in the Khumbu region.
              • TIMS Card (Trekkers' Information Management System): Required for all trekkers in Nepal. This card helps track trekkers for safety purposes and is obtained through your trekking agency or at the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu.
              • Valid Passport and Photos: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. You'll need to provide your original passport to your trekking agency for permit processing. Bring multiple passport-sized photos (usually 4-6 photos are required for all permits).
              • Important Note: All permits must be arranged through a registered trekking agency in Nepal. You cannot trek the Makalu Circuit independently. Your agency will handle all permit applications for both regions, but you must provide your original passport, photos, and proof of travel insurance well in advance. Permit processing can take several days, so plan accordingly.

One of the most spectacular aspects of the Makalu Circuit Trek is the opportunity to see three of the world's 8,000-meter peaks up close from different vantage points throughout the journey. These views are what make this circuit truly extraordinary and unique among Nepal's treks.

              The Three 8,000-Meter Giants:
