    Introduction

Are you longing for a wild and authentic journey that takes you away from the crowds and allows you to touch the sky? The Manaslu Circuit Trek is one of the world's greatest trekking adventures, offering a perfect blend of natural grandeur, rich culture, and thrilling challenges as it circles the eighth tallest mountain on Earth, Mt. Manaslu (8,163m).

This trek offers a glimpse into what the more famous Everest and Annapurna regions were like decades ago—raw, pristine, and profoundly beautiful. Due to its close proximity to Tibet, the Manaslu region remained a restricted zone, closed off to foreign trekkers until 1991. This history of isolation has preserved its unique culture and unspoiled landscapes.

On this 14-day journey, you will follow the ancient salt-trading route along the steep Budhi Gandaki River gorge, staying in local tea houses that offer warm hospitality along the entire route. Your trek will take you through an incredible diversity of landscapes, from lush rice fields and bamboo forests in the lower regions to alpine meadows and pine forests around villages like Namrung and Sama Gaon.

You will meet the remarkable people of the Manaslu region—the Larkya Bhote, Sherpas, and Gurungs—and get a firsthand experience of their Tibetan Buddhist faith, evident in the sacred mantras scripted on Mani walls, the unique Kani gates at village entrances, and the ancient monasteries nestled against the mountainsides.

As the Manaslu circuit progresses, you will ascend towards the trek's ultimate challenge: conquering the massive and notoriously beautiful Larkya La Pass (5,106m). From this outstanding vantage point, you will be surrounded by sharp silhouettes of countless Himalayan peaks breaking the blue horizon. The views of Manaslu, Himalchuli, Cheo Himal, and the Annapurna range are truly unforgettable.

To enhance your experience, our itinerary includes an acclimatization day in the stunning village of Sama Gaon, where you have the option to hike to the serene, alpine Birendra Lake or make the challenging ascent towards Manaslu Base Camp (4,800m) for even more spectacular views.

After crossing the pass, your journey concludes by joining a section of the Annapurna Circuit trail as you descend through Dharapani before driving back to the vibrant city of Kathmandu. This moderately challenging adventure, best experienced during the spring and autumn seasons, allows you to get closer to the most authentic side of Nepal.

It's a journey for those who seek to discover something new about the world, and perhaps about themselves.

Whichever destination you choose, both will offer impressive spectacles of Manaslu, its ice falls, and the surrounding glaciers, and will be crucial for your acclimatization.

    Important Note

Is the Manaslu Circuit Trek Very Hard?

While not requiring technical climbing skills, the Manaslu Circuit Trek is a strenuous and challenging journey that should not be underestimated. It's categorized as a moderate to challenging trek, achievable for most people with a good level of fitness and proper preparation.

    Key challenges you'll face include:

    Altitude

This is the most significant challenge. The trek starts at Machha Khola (869m) and ascends to 5,106m at Larkya La Pass, with the highest point being the pass itself. At these elevations, the oxygen level is roughly half of what it is at sea level, making every physical effort more demanding.

    Duration and Distance

The round trip covers approximately 177 km (about 110 miles) over 14 days. This means you'll be walking for 5 to 7 hours on most days.

    Terrain

The trail is often uneven, rocky, and involves steep ascents and descents. You can expect daily elevation gains of less than 1000m.

    Mental Fortitude

The combination of physical exertion, basic living conditions, and being away from home can be mentally taxing. A positive and resilient mindset is crucial.

    Who Can Do It?

With the right approach, this trek is accessible to a wide range of people, from seasoned hikers to determined beginners. Successful trekkers have ranged from teenagers to individuals in their 70s. The key is a willingness to challenge yourself and adequate preparation.

While shorter and longer options exist, a 14-day itinerary is often recommended for a balanced and successful Manaslu Circuit experience. Here's why:

    1

    Proper Acclimatization

A 14-day trek allows for a gradual ascent with crucial acclimatization days built in, typically in Sama Gaon. This significantly reduces the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and increases your chances of reaching your goal comfortably.

    2

A More Intimate and Comprehensive Experience

A longer itinerary allows you to explore different trails on your way up and down. For instance, after crossing Larkya La Pass, you can return via a different route through Dharapani, offering new perspectives of the stunning Himalayan scenery.

    3

    Deeper Cultural Immersion

You'll have more time to spend in the unique Larkya Bhote and Sherpa villages, interact with the local community, and learn about their ancient culture and Tibetan Buddhist traditions. The hospitality of the local people is a highlight of the journey.

    4

A Perfect Blend of Challenge and Enjoyment

This timeframe allows for a challenging yet enjoyable pace. You'll have a full day to explore the beautiful village of Sama Gaon, and you can take on side trips like the hike to Birendra Lake or the challenging ascent towards Manaslu Base Camp (4,800m) for spectacular views of the surrounding peaks.

    5

    Accessibility for All

The reasonable daily walking duration of 4 to 6 hours and the inclusion of rest days make a 14-day trek accessible to hikers of varying experience and fitness levels, including families and older adults.

    6

    Preparation for Future Adventures

Successfully completing the Manaslu Circuit Trek will build your confidence and prepare you for more demanding high-altitude adventures in Nepal, such as climbing peaks like Island Peak, Mera Peak, or Lobuche Peak.

A Typical Day on the Trek

Your days on the Manaslu Circuit Trek will follow a rhythm that connects you with the natural landscape and the local culture.

    Mornings

You'll wake up early to the sounds of the teahouse coming to life. After a hearty breakfast, you'll pack your daypack and set out on the trail, typically walking for 4 to 6 hours each day.

    The Trail

The scenery changes dramatically as you ascend. In the lower regions, you'll be accompanied by the Dudh Koshi River and walk through lush rhododendron and coniferous forests. As you climb higher, the landscape transforms into a dramatic realm of rock and ice, with sparse tundra vegetation.

    Lunch and Breaks

Your trek will be punctuated by a lunch break of about an hour and shorter stops to rest, take photos, and soak in the incredible views.

    Evenings

You'll arrive at your destination for the day in the late afternoon. The evenings are for relaxing, enjoying a delicious dinner at a Sherpa-run teahouse, and stargazing in the clear mountain sky.

    Food and Accommodation

    In Kathmandu

You can expect to stay in a comfortable three-star hotel with double occupancy rooms. Breakfast will be provided.

    On the Trek

You'll stay in mountain lodges, commonly known as teahouses. The rooms are basic, typically with two beds, but the hospitality is warm and welcoming.

    Meals

During the trek, your package will generally include breakfast, lunch, and dinner, which you'll have at the teahouses. The menu offers a variety of options, from traditional Nepali dishes like dal bhat (rice and lentils) to pasta, pizza, and Tibetan bread. The food choices become simpler the higher you go.

    Showers

Hot showers may not always be available, especially at higher altitudes, and there is usually an extra charge for them. However, boiled drinking water will be accessible.

    Staying Connected and Charged

    Internet/WiFi

You can stay connected during your trek. In larger villages like Sama Gaon, Samdo, and Dharapani, you can purchase limited WiFi access for a fee. However, connectivity is more limited in the remote Manaslu region compared to more popular trekking areas. You can use 4G data packages from Ncell or NTC by getting a local SIM card, though signal strength varies throughout the trek.

    Charging

Electricity is available in the villages, often supplemented by solar power. You can charge your electronic devices, though there is usually a small fee for this service.

    Transportation

Your tour package will typically include all necessary transportation:

    • Airport transfers in a private vehicle.
    • Private jeep drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola (trek start point).
    • Return by road from Dharapani to Besisahar, then onward drive to Kathmandu (private vehicle).

    Altitude Sickness and Acclimatization

As you'll be trekking to elevations above 5,000 meters, it's crucial to be aware of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

    Symptoms

The primary symptoms of AMS include headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, fatigue, and difficulty sleeping. These symptoms usually subside within 12 to 24 hours.

If they persist, the only cure is to descend to a lower altitude.

    Prevention

While AMS cannot be 100% prevented, the risk can be significantly reduced by:

    • Slow and Steady Ascent: A gradual climb with acclimatization days
    • Hydration: Drink plenty of water, at least 4 liters per day
    • Diamox: Consider talking to your doctor about using Diamox

    Getting Ready and Staying Safe

Proper preparation is key to a successful and enjoyable Manaslu Circuit Trek.

    Physical Fitness

Since this is a moderately challenging, high-altitude trek, you need to be physically fit. If you lead a sedentary lifestyle, it's recommended to start training at least 3 to 6 months before your trip.

    Recommended Training:
Cardiovascular exercise: Engage in activities like running, jogging, swimming, or cycling to build your endurance.
Strength training: Focus on leg and core exercises like squats, lunges, and push-ups.
Hiking practice: Go on long day hikes, preferably on hilly terrain, to get your body used to walking for several hours.
    First Aid Knowledge

It's beneficial to have a basic understanding of first aid for minor injuries.

    Mental Preparation

Research the weather, terrain, and landscape of the Manaslu region to mentally prepare for the journey ahead.

    Consult Your Doctor

If you have any pre-existing health conditions, consult your doctor before booking the trek.

    Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for the Manaslu Circuit Trek. Your insurance policy must cover:

    • Medical expenses and emergency evacuation up to an altitude of at least 6,000 meters.
    • Trip cancellation and interruption.
    • Loss or theft of baggage and equipment.

    • • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit
    • • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit

    Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, you absolutely can lengthen your Manaslu Circuit Trek. Building extra days into your itinerary is an excellent way to enhance your experience, improve acclimatization, and explore the region more deeply. We can arrange for additional days at any point along the trail.

    Popular options include:

    • Acclimatization and Exploration: Spending an extra day in villages like Sama Gaon is highly recommended for acclimatization. This allows you to embark on scenic day hikes to surrounding viewpoints and villages, such as the hike to Birendra Lake or towards Manaslu Base Camp for stunning views of the surrounding peaks.
    • Side Treks: You can incorporate beautiful side treks into your itinerary. A popular choice is the serene Birendra Lake trek, which can be added to the classic Manaslu Circuit route for a more comprehensive experience.
    • Rest and Recovery: Adding a rest day before the challenging ascent to Larkya La Pass or before the drive back to Kathmandu can be beneficial. An extra day in Dharapani also serves as a valuable buffer in case of transportation delays.
    • Kathmandu Exploration: You can also prolong your stay in Kathmandu to explore its rich cultural heritage, including its numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites, or to embark on shorter treks in the hills surrounding the valley.

The Manaslu region is accessible by road from Kathmandu, with scenic drives through the Nepalese countryside to reach the starting point of your trek.

    Key points regarding road access:

    • Departure & Duration: Most trips leave Kathmandu between 6:00–7:00 AM. Expect a 7–9 hour drive to Machha Khola via Arughat/Soti Khola, with the final 2–3 hours on rough, bumpy roads.
    • Typical Route: Kathmandu → Dhading/Arughat → Soti Khola → Machha Khola (start). Return: Dharapani → Besisahar → Kathmandu.
    • Vehicle Type: A private 4WD jeep is recommended for comfort and reliability. Buses/minibuses can reach Arughat; beyond that a local jeep is typically required.
    • Seasonal Factors: In monsoon (Jun–Sep), landslides and washouts can cause delays. Add buffer time and travel in daylight where possible.
    • Stops & Services: Limited ATMs and services after Arughat—carry sufficient cash and essentials. Expect police/permit checkpoints on the way to the Manaslu Conservation Area.

Yes, it is possible for children to participate in the Manaslu Circuit Trek. However, it requires careful planning and consideration. The primary concern is ensuring your child's safety and enjoyment.

    Consider the following:

    • Experience and Stamina: The child should have a genuine love for nature and be capable of walking for 4 to 6 hours a day on varied terrain. Prior hiking experience is highly beneficial.
    • Acclimatization: A standard itinerary may be too strenuous for a child. We can customize the trek by shortening the daily walking hours, which will add approximately 3 to 4 days to the total duration. A slower ascent is crucial for proper acclimatization and reduces the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
    • Monitoring for AMS: It can be more challenging to identify the symptoms of AMS in children, as they may struggle to communicate how they are feeling. Parents and guides must be extra vigilant in monitoring for symptoms like headaches, nausea, or unusual fatigue.

The ideal time to trek the Manaslu Circuit depends on your preferences for weather, crowds, and scenery. There are two primary trekking seasons:

    • Post-Monsoon (October - November): This is widely considered the best time. The monsoon rains have cleared the dust from the air, offering crystal-clear skies and magnificent views of Manaslu and the surrounding peaks. The weather is stable and dry, and temperatures are pleasant, making it the most popular and busiest season on the trail.
    • Pre-Monsoon (March - May): This is the second most popular season. The weather is warming up, and the trails come alive with blooming rhododendrons, especially in the lower elevations. While the views are generally excellent, a haze can sometimes build up in the afternoons. This season also attracts climbers attempting to summit Manaslu, offering a unique chance to see the region in full swing.

For first-time trekkers in Nepal, the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek is often recommended as a more comfortable introduction to Himalayan trekking. However, the choice ultimately depends on your fitness level and what you want from the experience.

    Here's a comparison:

    • Altitude and Difficulty: The ABC trek reaches a maximum altitude of 4,130 meters, whereas the Manaslu Circuit Trek reaches 5,106 meters. The significant difference in altitude makes the Manaslu Circuit Trek more physically demanding and carries a higher risk of altitude sickness, requiring more careful acclimatization.
    • Scenery and Terrain: The ABC trail is known for its lush, green landscapes, passing through terraced fields, dense forests, and traditional Gurung villages before entering a stunning mountain amphitheater. The Manaslu Circuit trail is more rugged and stark, characterized by its high-altitude environment, dramatic passes, and unparalleled, up-close views of the world's eighth highest peak.
    • Accessibility: Recent developments and improved trail infrastructure have made the Manaslu Circuit Trek more accessible than ever before, but the ABC trek remains a gentler option for beginners.

While prior high-altitude trekking experience is not mandatory, it is highly beneficial. A strong level of physical fitness is essential for a safe and enjoyable trek. The journey involves daily walking for 5-6 hours on average, with some days being longer and more strenuous, especially at higher altitudes where oxygen levels are lower.

We recommend a training regimen that includes:

    • Cardiovascular Exercise: At least 3-4 times a week, engage in activities like hiking, running, cycling, or swimming to build endurance.
    • Strength Training: Focus on strengthening your legs and core to handle the long ascents and descents.
    • Practice Hikes: Undertake several long day hikes, wearing the boots and backpack you intend to use on the trek.

A comprehensive packing list will be provided upon confirmation of your trip. However, essential items include layered clothing, a high-quality down jacket, a warm sleeping bag, and well-worn-in hiking boots.

Kathmandu's Thamel district is a one-stop shop for trekking gear. You can easily rent or purchase any equipment you need at reasonable prices.

    • Renting: Items like down jackets, sleeping bags, and trekking poles are commonly rented. This is a cost-effective option, but be sure to inspect the quality and condition of the gear carefully.
    • Buying: It is highly recommended to purchase personal items like hiking boots and base layers yourself to ensure a proper fit and hygiene. Breaking in your boots well before the trek is crucial to prevent blisters.

It is not safe to drink tap or stream water directly. We strongly advise against buying single-use plastic water bottles, as they are expensive and create a significant environmental problem in the fragile mountain ecosystem.

The best practices for staying hydrated are:

    • Water Purification: Bring a reliable water purification method. Options include purification tablets or drops, a UV sterilizer like a SteriPen, or a water bottle with a built-in filter.
    • Boiled Water: You can ask the teahouse and lodge owners to refill your bottle with boiled water, which is the safest option. They typically charge a small fee for this service, and the cost increases with altitude. Please note that the cost of drinking water is not included in the package.

Toilet facilities along the Manaslu Circuit trail are basic but functional. In the lower elevations and larger settlements like Machha Khola and Jagat, you may find Western-style flush toilets in your teahouse.

As you ascend, the facilities become more rustic. You can expect to encounter:

    • Squat Toilets: These are common in the higher-altitude teahouses.
    • Shared Facilities: Private, attached bathrooms are rare after Namche Bazaar. Toilets are typically shared and may be located in a separate outhouse.
    • Bring Your Own Supplies: You should always carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as these are generally not provided.

Yes, showing respect for the local Sherpa culture is an important part of the trekking experience. Here are some key guidelines:

    • Modest Dress: Wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees, especially when walking through villages and visiting monasteries.
    • Respectful Photography: Always ask for permission before taking photos of local people. Photography may be prohibited inside monasteries and religious sites.
    • Trail Etiquette: When encountering pack animals like yaks or dzopkyos, always stand on the uphill side of the trail to avoid being knocked off.
    • Religious Customs: Always pass mani (prayer) walls, stupas, and chortens on your left, walking in a clockwise direction. Use your right hand or both hands to give or receive items.
    • Greetings: A friendly "Namaste" (I salute the divine in you) with hands pressed together is the traditional and respectful greeting.
