Are you longing for a wild and authentic journey that takes you away from the crowds and allows you to touch the sky? The Manaslu Circuit Trek is one of the world's greatest trekking adventures, offering a perfect blend of natural grandeur, rich culture, and thrilling challenges as it circles the eighth tallest mountain on Earth, Mt. Manaslu (8,163m).
This trek offers a glimpse into what the more famous Everest and Annapurna regions were like decades ago—raw, pristine, and profoundly beautiful. Due to its close proximity to Tibet, the Manaslu region remained a restricted zone, closed off to foreign trekkers until 1991. This history of isolation has preserved its unique culture and unspoiled landscapes.
On this 14-day journey, you will follow the ancient salt-trading route along the steep Budhi Gandaki River gorge, staying in local tea houses that offer warm hospitality along the entire route. Your trek will take you through an incredible diversity of landscapes, from lush rice fields and bamboo forests in the lower regions to alpine meadows and pine forests around villages like Namrung and Sama Gaon.
You will meet the remarkable people of the Manaslu region—the Larkya Bhote, Sherpas, and Gurungs—and get a firsthand experience of their Tibetan Buddhist faith, evident in the sacred mantras scripted on Mani walls, the unique Kani gates at village entrances, and the ancient monasteries nestled against the mountainsides.
As the Manaslu circuit progresses, you will ascend towards the trek's ultimate challenge: conquering the massive and notoriously beautiful Larkya La Pass (5,106m). From this outstanding vantage point, you will be surrounded by sharp silhouettes of countless Himalayan peaks breaking the blue horizon. The views of Manaslu, Himalchuli, Cheo Himal, and the Annapurna range are truly unforgettable.
To enhance your experience, our itinerary includes an acclimatization day in the stunning village of Sama Gaon, where you have the option to hike to the serene, alpine Birendra Lake or make the challenging ascent towards Manaslu Base Camp (4,800m) for even more spectacular views.
After crossing the pass, your journey concludes by joining a section of the Annapurna Circuit trail as you descend through Dharapani before driving back to the vibrant city of Kathmandu. This moderately challenging adventure, best experienced during the spring and autumn seasons, allows you to get closer to the most authentic side of Nepal.
It's a journey for those who seek to discover something new about the world, and perhaps about themselves.
Follow our carefully crafted 14-day journey around the Manaslu Circuit, designed for optimal acclimatization and unforgettable experiences.

Our dedicated representative will cordially receive you at the exit gate of Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA). They will escort you to your comfortable accommodation in the capital, where you can settle in, rest, and recover from your journey. Start your day surrounded by the energy of the city! Soon after breakfast, our trip guide will meet you at the hotel for an introduction and a comprehensive briefing of your Manaslu Circuit trek itinerary. Afterward, get ready to see what Kathmandu has to offer. An optional tour of Swayambhunath and Boudhanath, two of the oldest and most significant Buddhist Stupas, and Pashupatinath, the ancient Hindu shrine of Lord Shiva, will take you to a different spiritual realm. After the sightseeing, our guide will help you review your gear and assist in renting or purchasing any necessary items from local shops.
We have quite a long and adventurous drive awaiting us today as we leave Kathmandu in a private jeep and depart towards Machha Khola, the starting point of our trek. After leaving the capital, we will travel along the main highway before turning off onto a more rugged road that leads towards the Gorkha district. As we journey toward the Arughat Market, the Himalayan ranges of Manaslu and Ganesh Himal will be fascinating to watch. The final stretch of the drive takes us along a bumpy track through small hamlets and lush jungles to reach Machha Khola, where we will settle in for the night.
Tie on your hiking boots, as we begin our long walk today! The trail follows a winding up-and-down path along the Budhi Gandaki River. After about an hour's walk, our trail takes us to the natural hot springs at Tatopani. The track now constitutes a steep climb until we cross a suspension bridge over the Dobhan Khola. A slender forest track then leads us over the Yaru Khola via a long metal bridge. Soon, we will arrive at the small yet pretty village of Jagat, which has trails made from granite slabs and marks the entrance to the Manaslu Conservation Area.
Begin a beautiful day with the view of Shringi Himal up front. We will walk along mountain paths and ridges to reach Salleri, from where the trail descends to Sirdibas. After crossing a long Tibetan-style suspension bridge, we will reach the beautiful Gurung village of Philim. A deep bamboo forest will then lead us up through a narrow canyon, and after passing through Nyak Phedi, we will ultimately reach the small village of Deng. The large Kani (gates) and Mani walls are clearly visible here, indicating the strong influence of Tibetan Buddhism in the region.
The torrential waters of the Budhi Gandaki River will continue to follow us today. After exiting Deng, we will cross the river and move ahead to Rana and Bihi Phedi. After tackling a steep slope, we will reach the village of Ghap. From here, a serpentine road traversing a thick bamboo jungle will lead us to the beautiful village of Namrung, where we can rest while observing the delight of Saula Himal, Pang Phuchin, and the first clear views of Manaslu itself.
Starting from Namrung, the forest terrain soon ends, and the path opens up into a wider valley. It will take us around 2 hours to reach the settlement of Lihi. Taking the right-hand trail, and glancing at the stunning Himalchuli, we will soon arrive at the villages of Sho and Lho, where the Ribang Gompa and incredible views of Manaslu are particular highlights. We will now walk through the tight confines of the Thusan Khola gorge to reach Shyaula. A final one-and-a-half-hour walk brings us to Sama Gaon, the largest and most important village in the valley, with imposing mountains emerging before our eyes.
On this day of acclimatization, we will stay active so our bodies can adapt well to the Manaslu air. You have two main options: a strenuous but spectacular hike towards Manaslu Base Camp (4,800m), which involves a steep and long climb, or a simpler but beautiful walk to the serene, alpine Birendra Lake (3,460m). Whichever destination you choose, both will offer impressive spectacles of Manaslu, its ice falls, and the surrounding glaciers, and will be crucial for your acclimatization.
This is a crucial acclimatization day. Listen to your body and don't push yourself too hard. The optional hike to Manaslu Base Camp is challenging and should only be attempted if you're feeling well acclimatized.
We have a gentle and short walk today as we aim to reach Samdo, allowing for further acclimatization. First, we will walk through the vast grassy meadow of Kermo Kharka and then walk down to cross the Budhi Gandaki river for the last time. A final steep 150m climb will take us to the beautiful white gates of Samdo Village, a remote settlement very close to the Tibetan border. After taking some moments of relaxation, you may choose to walk around the village or even try a short climb up the nearby Samdo Ri for better views.
We have a short distance to cover today; however, we will be ascending to a much greater height. It is important to take our time, walk slowly, and stay hydrated. Moving along grassy meadows, we will soon come across the impressive Larke Glacier. An upward track will eventually lead us to Dharamsala, also known as Larkya Phedi—the base camp for the notorious Larkya La Pass. The impressive snowy high ridges of the surrounding peaks shine brightly here, with the black Syacha Glacier in the background.
The most demanding and spectacular day of our Manaslu Circuit trek is here. We will start early before dawn to cross the pass before the afternoon winds pick up. Walking along the eastern slope of the Larke Glacier, we will rise gradually along the rocky terrain. The climb is non-technical but may take around 4 to 5 hours to reach the prayer-flag-adorned summit of the Larkya La Pass. The challenging ascent will be rewarded with a bewildering panorama of Himlung Himal, Kanguru, and Annapurna II. A long, sharp descent of about 600m awaits us, which will take us first towards Larke Kharka and finally to the beautiful alpine meadows of Bhimthang.
This is the most challenging day of the trek. We start very early (before dawn) to avoid afternoon winds and ensure safe passage. The altitude gain and descent are significant - take your time and stay hydrated.
Today is a pleasant but long day of trekking as we descend from the high mountains. Walking through a pathway of eternal glaciers and beautiful forests, we will soon enter a warmer climate fed by the Dudh Khola. We will cross the river and walk down through Hambuk and Gho. The views of Phungi Himal and Manaslu will not leave our sight as we progress down. A final easy descent will direct us to Tilje and then on to Dharapani, our overnight destination, where we will officially join the Annapurna Circuit trail.
It's time to conclude our Manaslu Circuit trek and head back to the lively civilization of Kathmandu. From Dharapani, a local jeep will transport us on a bumpy but scenic road to Besisahar. From there, a private vehicle will drive us back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, you can enjoy a hot shower, reliable WiFi, and a final celebratory farewell dinner with our team.
After breakfast, you may have some free time to visit Kathmandu shops for some last-minute gifts until it's time to go to the airport for your flight back home. A representative will transfer you to the airport, marking the end of your incredible Manaslu adventure.

While not requiring technical climbing skills, the Manaslu Circuit Trek is a strenuous and challenging journey that should not be underestimated. It's categorized as a moderate to challenging trek, achievable for most people with a good level of fitness and proper preparation.
This is the most significant challenge. The trek starts at Machha Khola (869m) and ascends to 5,106m at Larkya La Pass, with the highest point being the pass itself. At these elevations, the oxygen level is roughly half of what it is at sea level, making every physical effort more demanding.
The round trip covers approximately 177 km (about 110 miles) over 14 days. This means you'll be walking for 5 to 7 hours on most days.
The trail is often uneven, rocky, and involves steep ascents and descents. You can expect daily elevation gains of less than 1000m.
The combination of physical exertion, basic living conditions, and being away from home can be mentally taxing. A positive and resilient mindset is crucial.
With the right approach, this trek is accessible to a wide range of people, from seasoned hikers to determined beginners. Successful trekkers have ranged from teenagers to individuals in their 70s. The key is a willingness to challenge yourself and adequate preparation.
While shorter and longer options exist, a 14-day itinerary is often recommended for a balanced and successful Manaslu Circuit experience. Here's why:
A 14-day trek allows for a gradual ascent with crucial acclimatization days built in, typically in Sama Gaon. This significantly reduces the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and increases your chances of reaching your goal comfortably.
A longer itinerary allows you to explore different trails on your way up and down. For instance, after crossing Larkya La Pass, you can return via a different route through Dharapani, offering new perspectives of the stunning Himalayan scenery.
You'll have more time to spend in the unique Larkya Bhote and Sherpa villages, interact with the local community, and learn about their ancient culture and Tibetan Buddhist traditions. The hospitality of the local people is a highlight of the journey.
This timeframe allows for a challenging yet enjoyable pace. You'll have a full day to explore the beautiful village of Sama Gaon, and you can take on side trips like the hike to Birendra Lake or the challenging ascent towards Manaslu Base Camp (4,800m) for spectacular views of the surrounding peaks.
The reasonable daily walking duration of 4 to 6 hours and the inclusion of rest days make a 14-day trek accessible to hikers of varying experience and fitness levels, including families and older adults.
Successfully completing the Manaslu Circuit Trek will build your confidence and prepare you for more demanding high-altitude adventures in Nepal, such as climbing peaks like Island Peak, Mera Peak, or Lobuche Peak.
Your days on the Manaslu Circuit Trek will follow a rhythm that connects you with the natural landscape and the local culture.
You'll wake up early to the sounds of the teahouse coming to life. After a hearty breakfast, you'll pack your daypack and set out on the trail, typically walking for 4 to 6 hours each day.
The scenery changes dramatically as you ascend. In the lower regions, you'll be accompanied by the Dudh Koshi River and walk through lush rhododendron and coniferous forests. As you climb higher, the landscape transforms into a dramatic realm of rock and ice, with sparse tundra vegetation.
Your trek will be punctuated by a lunch break of about an hour and shorter stops to rest, take photos, and soak in the incredible views.
You'll arrive at your destination for the day in the late afternoon. The evenings are for relaxing, enjoying a delicious dinner at a Sherpa-run teahouse, and stargazing in the clear mountain sky.
You can expect to stay in a comfortable three-star hotel with double occupancy rooms. Breakfast will be provided.
You'll stay in mountain lodges, commonly known as teahouses. The rooms are basic, typically with two beds, but the hospitality is warm and welcoming.
During the trek, your package will generally include breakfast, lunch, and dinner, which you'll have at the teahouses. The menu offers a variety of options, from traditional Nepali dishes like dal bhat (rice and lentils) to pasta, pizza, and Tibetan bread. The food choices become simpler the higher you go.
Hot showers may not always be available, especially at higher altitudes, and there is usually an extra charge for them. However, boiled drinking water will be accessible.
You can stay connected during your trek. In larger villages like Sama Gaon, Samdo, and Dharapani, you can purchase limited WiFi access for a fee. However, connectivity is more limited in the remote Manaslu region compared to more popular trekking areas. You can use 4G data packages from Ncell or NTC by getting a local SIM card, though signal strength varies throughout the trek.
Electricity is available in the villages, often supplemented by solar power. You can charge your electronic devices, though there is usually a small fee for this service.
Your tour package will typically include all necessary transportation:
As you'll be trekking to elevations above 5,000 meters, it's crucial to be aware of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
The primary symptoms of AMS include headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, fatigue, and difficulty sleeping. These symptoms usually subside within 12 to 24 hours.
If they persist, the only cure is to descend to a lower altitude.
While AMS cannot be 100% prevented, the risk can be significantly reduced by:
