If you are looking to "look deeply into nature" and find a trekking experience that offers tranquility away from the crowds, then you will not want to miss the fabulous Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek. Opened to trekkers only in 2012, this route remains a secret, secluded treasure within the Annapurna region. It is a journey that takes you along an elevated, forested ridge, offering fascinating and intimate spectacles of the Himalayas at every turn.
The Mardi Himal trail still retains a raw sense of wilderness and adventure due to being less traveled, which significantly adds to its appeal. However, the most significant and unique advantage of this trek is its incredible, intimate closeness to the iconic Fishtail, or Machhapuchhare Peak (6,993m). When you stand on the snowy ground of Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m), nestled beneath Mardi Himal itself (5,587m), it feels as though only the tip of Mardi Peak separates you from the sacred, twin-summited mountain of Lord Shiva. For this reason, many consider the Mardi Himal trek to offer a more profound mountain experience than any other trail in the Annapurna region.
Your views are not limited to just the Fishtail. In the distance, you will also be able to see the enormous white faces of Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna South (7,219m), Hiunchuli (6,441m), and even the distant Dhaulagiri (8,167m). The trek offers incredible terrain diversity, taking you from picturesque rice terraces in the lowlands, up through pristine cloud forests, and finally into a high alpine landscape of shrubs and rock. You may even have the chance to encounter the magical wildlife of the Annapurna Conservation Area.
This short, 9-day journey commences and concludes in Kathmandu. Your adventure begins with a scenic drive to the beautiful lakeside city of Pokhara. From there, another short drive takes you to the trailhead at Kande. The trek itself involves walking along narrow trails and ridges, with overnight stays at the four peaceful and aptly named camps of the Mardi Himal route: Forest Camp (2,500m), Low Camp (3,150m), Middle Camp (3,550m), and finally High Camp (3,600m).
The adventure culminates with a pre-dawn hike up to the trek's highest point, Mardi Himal Base Camp. After soaking in the incredible, close-up views, your return journey follows a different, culturally rich route through the traditional Gurung village of Siding before you drive back to Pokhara and then on to Kathmandu. The short duration, the relatively easy yet awe-inspiring trails, the wild nature of the journey, and the calm environment make the Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek an adventure that anyone can and should enjoy.
Follow our carefully crafted 13-day journey to Annapurna Base Camp, designed for optimal acclimatization and unforgettable experiences.
The majestic city of Kathmandu is glad to welcome you to its soil! Once you are out of the TIA Gate, you will meet our representative who will guide you to your overnight hotel. Please take as much time as you like to relax. In the evening, your guide will offer a brief overview of your Mardi Himal Base Camp trek itinerary. Once through, feel free to wander the corners of Kathmandu and get your first taste of Momos or feel the power of Dal Bhat.
After a good breakfast, we will proceed to board a comfortable tourist bus for the 200km journey to Pokhara, one of the most photogenic and beloved cities in Nepal. Once we get through the traffic of Kathmandu, breathe a sigh of relief as we venture over the Thankot Pass. Our bus will join the Prithvi Highway, traveling alongside the Trishuli River valley with views of green hills and distant Himalayan peaks. In the late afternoon, you can head to the shores of Phewa Lake, take a boat ride, and enjoy your evening by this peaceful and beautiful lake.
The road between Kathmandu and Pokhara is currently under construction, which may result in extended travel time of 8+ hours and a less comfortable journey. For a more convenient travel experience, domestic flights between Kathmandu and Pokhara are available at an additional cost. Please contact us for flight booking options and pricing.
Waking up early, we will take a short 45-minute drive from Pokhara to the trailhead at Kande. It's time to set forth on our hiking journey! A well-built stone-paved path will lead us on a rigorous ascent through an enchanting rhododendron forest for about 1.5 hours to reach the Australian Camp. We will take a breather here in the fascinating company of Fishtail, Hiunchuli, and Annapurna South. After a momentary break, a steeply forwarding trail will eventually conclude at Pitam Deurali, where we will get our first glimpse of Mardi Himal.
We have a quite steep and tough trail ahead of us today. The mossy, enchanting forest trail after Pitam Deurali will take us towards Tolka. We will follow a mountain stream, cross a suspension bridge, and pass through the Landruk Gurung community. From here, the trail will rise even more, taking us up a hill with carved stone steps to a temple that offers a fantastic sight of Ghandruk village. After about another hour, we will reach a vast, open, cleared area known as Forest Camp (or Kokar), where views of Annapurna South and Fishtail will be our reward.
We will keep progressing higher along the forested ridge. The vegetation soon changes into a beautiful 'cloud forest' with lichens, ferns, and mosses. After about 2.5 hours, we will reach Low Camp, where we can find some teahouses for lunch. From here, we will tackle a 600-meter sheer ascent. We will walk across the north trail along the ridge, passing Middle Camp and Badal Danda. After a final brief, steep climb, we will emerge out of the forest and follow the open ridge to finally arrive at High Camp, with the sharp, razor-like features of Annapurna South and Fishtail towering directly above us.
Today is the longest and most spectacular hiking day of our trek. We will have an early breakfast and then set out on our journey, following the Kali Danda ridge from High Camp. The trail will steepen along the rocky landscape. After climbing for around 3 to 4 hours, we will finally be at the Mardi Himal Base Camp—the highest and major feature of our trek. Here, you can feel as though only the peak of Mardi Himal separates you from the magnificent Fishtail. After soaking in this admirable moment, we will begin the long descent back down to the comfort and warmth of our teahouse at Badal Danda.
From Badal Danda, we will proceed on a different route, descending steeply through Low Camp and following artistically constructed terraces. We will descend a total of around 2,000 meters, passing the Mardi Khola to reach the traditional and culturally rich Siding Village. Here, we will experience the hospitality of the local Brahmin and Gurung communities before our transport picks us up for the adventurous drive through Lumre and back to the beautiful city of Pokhara.
Ending our Mardi Himal Base Camp trek, we will again take the 200km drive back to Kathmandu by tourist bus. Enjoying the final views of the landscapes, hills, and Himalayas, we will pass by the Trishuli River and arrive back in the warmth of the capital city. In the evening, our team will organize a celebratory farewell dinner, so we can have your pleasant company before you return home.
Your Mardi Himal Base Camp trek is now closing, and we sincerely hope you had a fantastic experience with our team. We will arrange for your transfer to the airport based on your flight time for your final departure.
