Have you ever dreamt of an adventure that takes you beyond the ordinary, a journey on two wheels into a secret land where time itself seems to have stood still? The Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour is a truly epic odyssey, an exhilarating expedition that takes you deep into the crown jewel of Nepal—the ancient, forbidden kingdom of Lo. This is not just a motorbike ride; it is a pilgrimage into the heights of an unknown world, a chance to ride through one of the most culturally preserved and scenically dramatic landscapes on Earth.
For nine incredible days, this tour will have you in the saddle of a powerful Royal Enfield, navigating through a magnificent and surreal landscape framed by the great Himalayas. You will ride in the constant, awe-inspiring presence of iconic 8,000-meter giants, including Annapurna I (8,091m) and Dhaulagiri (8,167m), as well as the beautiful peaks of Nilgiri and Tilicho. This is a journey through a region that has successfully retained its ancient charm, its profound originality, and a cultural and archaeological heritage that has remained vibrant for over a millennium. Upper Mustang is a true sanctuary for motorcyclists who seek to immerse themselves in both rich cultural history and the unparalleled splendor of the natural world.
Nestled in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, this north-central region of Nepal was a restricted kingdom, completely closed to foreign visitors until 1992. Even today, it remains one of Nepal's most exclusive destinations. It was only opened to motorized vehicles in 2010, and to preserve its unique character, only a limited number of visitors are permitted to enter each year, requiring a special pre-paid permit. This has allowed the region to remain one of the last vestiges of pure, undiluted Tibetan culture in the world.
Your adventure with us begins as you mount a rugged and reliable Royal Enfield Himalayan and traverse the city highways of Kathmandu and the beautiful lakeside city of Pokhara. In the days that follow, your true off-road expedition commences. You will ride through the picturesque landscapes of the Lower Mustang, journeying into the magnificent Kali Gandaki gorge, the deepest in the world. The trail becomes more challenging and dramatic as you pass through the enchanting villages of Kagbeni and Samar, officially entering the restricted Upper Mustang.
The ultimate destination is the extraordinary Lo Manthang, the only ancient walled kingdom in all of Nepal. Here, the monasteries stand timeless, their sacred walls still echoing with the events of a thousand years past. A major highlight is the exploration of the Chhoser cave complex, a multi-storied network of man-made dwellings that has been the subject of astonishing archaeological discoveries, offering a profound insight into the rich and mysterious history of the area.
After immersing yourself in the wonders of Lo Manthang, your tour will lead you back into the Lower Mustang and to the pious Muktinath shrine, a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists. Here, you will have the opportunity for a divine purification ritual beneath the 108 natural water spouts. The journey continues with a relaxing stop at the Tatopani hot springs, a perfect way to rejuvenate your spirit before the final ride back to Kathmandu via the picturesque city of Pokhara.
This is a journey of constant discovery, with continuous elevation changes and the crossing of several high, windswept passes, including the Syangboche La and Mui La. This adventure is far from boring. It is a true test of skill and spirit, made for those who are always searching for a physical challenge and who possess the prior off-road riding experience necessary to conquer this incredible and unforgettable Himalayan kingdom.
Your 12-day Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour takes you through the forbidden kingdom of Lo, exploring ancient monasteries, high-altitude desert landscapes, and the mystical walled city of Lo Manthang. Each day is carefully planned to maximize your adventure while ensuring safety and cultural immersion.
Greetings from the heart of Nepal! Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), our representative will be waiting to welcome you. They will then transfer you to your hotel. After you have refreshed, feel free to use the rest of the day to explore the city and get the first taste of its charming atmosphere. In the late afternoon, you will have a pre-trip briefing to discuss the exciting journey ahead.
After breakfast, your guide will meet you for a briefing about the travel program. We will then have a full day to discover the historic city of Kathmandu. We will visit Pashupatinath Temple, a Hindu temple where we will get to see funeral rites in the open air. Then, a short trip to Boudhanath and Swayambhunath will take place, where we can see peaceful monks and familiar monkeys. In the early evening, we will inspect our Royal Enfield bikes and take a test ride to get used to the Nepal traffic rules.
We will have a very early departure by motorbike to Pokhara after breakfast. We will leave the Kathmandu valley and take a dizzying descent along the Prithvi Highway towards the Trishuli Valley. We will then go up along the Mugling-Narayanghat Highway towards Bandipur, an old Newar town. As we proceed, we can see the silent giants of Annapurna, Langtang, and Ganesh. Eventually, we will arrive at the lakeside town of Pokhara, with the majestic Annapurna massif as a backdrop.
Today, our off-road adventure begins. We will ride for a few miles over the asphalted road of the Baglung Highway and make a short stop at Kushma to discover the longest suspension bridge in Nepal. Now, firing our bike engines once more, we will proceed to Beni. The track now goes up along the Kali Gandaki River, and it becomes narrower and narrower until we arrive at Tatopani. The forward track now rises steadily to Dana. En route, we'll stop to admire the beautifully falling Rupse Chhahara (waterfall) before reaching the small Thakali settlement of Ghasa and finally Kalopani.
After breakfast, we will set out on our Upper Mustang Motorbike tour adventure again, constantly going up. We will first ride past the Apple city of Marpha and drive towards Jomsom. At the edge of Kagbeni, the ACAP Checkpost will examine our permits. After they let us through, a rugged, dirty, and rocky terrain will lead us up towards Tangbe. The snow-capped tip of the 7,061m high Nilgiri seems exhilarating from up here. A 10 km long descending track will direct us towards Chhusang and then to Chele. Once again, we will push our bikes for the uphill road until we reach Samar.
After waking up in a living postcard-like surrounding, we will start to move through the territory of the Mustang Kingdom. The onward road is difficult, with climbs, cliffs, and passes. First, we will have to ride up to the massive elevation of the Syangboche La Pass. We will then drive down to the charming village of Ghami. Get ready for a steep and vertically rising rough track that ascends to the 4,170m altitude of Mui La Pass. From here, we will drive down towards Dhakmar Village. After this brief detour, we will press on to Tsarang Village. Following a wider road, we will head north to overcome the 3,950m windy Lo La Pass as we set our sights on Lo Manthang.
We are in the capital of Mustang, where we will have the honor of spending one whole day visiting its truly magnificent monasteries and caves. First, we will visit the nomads here and their high-altitude yak camps. Then, we will head to explore some of the artistic old Gompas of this kingdom, such as the 1420-built Champa Lhakang and the vibrant red Thugchen Gompa. Next, we will head east of Lo Manthang and ride along a 16 km long road that will lead us to the Chhoser Village, renowned for its remarkable caves believed to have been made thousands of years ago.
Enjoy the brilliant sunshine gracing the white and blue peaks for one last time. We have a long and technical ride ahead, but the end of today's travels will be incredibly sacred as we set foot in the revered land of Muktinath. We will set off along the well-known terrain and ride back to Tsarang and Ghami, eventually reaching Kagbeni. A small stretch of asphalt road will take us to Muktinath in less than half an hour, where the landscape transitions from Martian land to green-rich vegetation.
We will spend the morning at the Vishnu Temple that overlooks the entire Muktinath town. We will also engage in a purification ritual by making three encircling tours around the temple under the 108 fountains of cold water. We will then take our Royal Enfield and reach Jomsom through the sublime track. From here, we will continue towards Marpha, known for its apples. Slowly, the landscape begins to transition into much greener terrain. The asphalt-wide road will reappear, but it becomes more technical as we near Tatopani, where we will relax in the natural hot water baths.
We will begin our return journey through the beauty of the Himalayan foothills. Following the familiar route will be much easier and more comfortable now. After we reach Beni, we may take a tiny mountain road that will guide us toward the Kalika Bhagwati Temple in Baglung. Then, we will make our way back to Pokhara, enjoying the dizzying views of Fishtail and Annapurna. The evening in Pokhara will be a festive delight, with time to walk along the Phewa lake shore or go to a pub.
On the last day of our Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour, we will go back down the same magnificent roads that leave Pokhara and take us through the pretty rice fields towards Bandipur. Gradually, Kathmandu will be reached late in the evening, a perfect time for gathering around one final time to enjoy each other's company over a warm farewell dinner.
If your flight is in the afternoon or evening, you can enjoy some free time in Nepal's capital and shop for some wonderful artifacts. We will be at your hotel on time to drive you to Tribhuvan International Airport so you can fly back home. Your Upper Mustang Motorbike tour is now complete.
